    I have no idea!  But I wanted to weigh in on this question because it's a good question and I'm ashamed to say I had never even thought about "surplus" fetuses before......

    But I will say that it's sad to realize that, even if there are surplus fetuses, the nature of man is so that they'll probably be used for stem-cell research and such,  which, to me, should not be, because each fetus is a life in itself and there should never be "surplus" fetuses to begin with.........

    Brenda, I may be out of line, but I am fairly certain that in some instances more than one egg is fertilized or attempted to be fertilized simply to ensure at least 1 successful fertilization. Maybe others who have firsthand information will weigh in and provide additional information.
