The farmer's vote is crucial in the Mid-West and Plains states. Not only is ethanol subsidized, imported ethanol is hit with a 50 cent per gallon tariff. So that adds up to a $2.50 per gallon welfare payment to corn farmers and ethanol distillers. Imagine how much gasoline would cost if it was competing with imported ethanol for filling the gas tanks on all those flex fuel vehicles.
