Barack Obama's Dog

Updated on November 9, 2012

The White House Dog - Meet Bo

So would this dog be considered The First Dog? Barack Obama promised a new furry friend to his girls and here it comes, straight from Texas. It is a Portuguese water dog the kids named Bo, who arrived Easter Weekend.

Bo, a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog, was given to Malia and Sasha Obama by Sen. Edward Kennedy.

The Obama Girls chose the name Bo for the pup because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley. The name for the dog was an apparent reference to the singer "Bo" Diddley

Thanks to Bo for making it happen

I want to thank Bo for making this lens become as popular as it is. The hype over the First Dog has been huge. Maybe we all just needed to take a break from everything else going on in the world and focus on our furry friends who also need us.

I created this lens originally to focus on the fact the President was rescuing a dog and the importance of that and that is something I know very well being the owner of 9 rescues myself.

So thank you to all who have helped this lens get the honor of being LOTD and I hope it may inspire some to go out and rescue a furry pet of your own.

Bo, America's Commander in Leash

Bo, American's Commander in Leash (TM) is the first children's book starring the most famous dog in the world. Join Bo on an exciting adventure as he learns all about the White House and experiences the traditions that make it such a special place. Bo's adventures include time-honored White House traditions, including the Easter egg roll, Fourth of July fireworks on the National Mall, the pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey, and all the festivities associated with holiday time at the White House. The First Pup also helps the Obama Family establish new traditions, such as playing on the First Kids' new swing set, planting vegetables in the White House's new organic garden, and playing basketball with the President.

Bemidji dog is half-sister of Obama familys Bo

A Bemidji family has a White House canine connection.

Ruby, a 2-year-old Portuguese water dog owned by Julie Quanrud and her husband, Ric Meixell, is the half-sister of President Barack Obama's new family dog, Bo.

"I was suspicious because the muzzle is the same," Quanrud said, adding that she became even more suspicious when she saw the Obama family's dog had the exact same white markings as Julius, a full sibling of Ruby's.

What the The Humane Society of the United States has to say: - Damage Control: Obama Family Makes Donation To D.C. Humane Society

At the very least, we thank President Obama for drawing attention to the plight of shelter dogs - and for making a donation to the Humane Society. We're sure Bo will have a most-loving family and equally beautiful life at the White House. Obviously, we wish that the pup could have come from a shelter, but hope the promotion and support of animal rescue shelters and organizations around the country continues to be a part of this administration.

The Dog Choices were narrowed down - BUT it seems the Portuguese Water Dog won the choice.

The Obamas had narrowed down the choice of the White House puppy to a Labradoodle or Portuguese water dog.

Both breeds generally shed less fur than some other kinds of dogs - Malia is allergic to dog hair

Mrs Obama and the girls started their search with Washington's animal shelters for the puppy their father promised them during his November 4 victory speech.

The Obamas had also asked for rugs and flooring that can withstand scratching .

About Portuguese Water Dogs

Portuguese Water Dogs are a breed of water dog similar to poodles. PWDs are highly intelligent, have curly coats, and do not shed. However, unlike Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs are robustly built, with stout legs, and their tails are left naturally long and undocked. They have webbed toes, for swimming, which one can notice by trying to pass one's finger between the dog's toes. Their eyes are brown, and their coats can be black, reddish brown, white, or black and white.

Portuguese Water Dog (Comprehensive Owner's Guide)

The seafaring wonder known as the Portuguese Water Dog has made an unprecedented splash in the American dog world. An exceptional diver and swimmer, the Portuguese Water Dog excels in sports in the water and on land, a true working dog of unique ability.

About Labradoodles

A Labradoodle is a crossbred or hybrid dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature Poodle.

Labradoodles' hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be straight, wavy, or curly. Some Labradoodles do shed, although the coat usually sheds less and has less dog odor than that of a Labrador Retriever. The color range includes white, cream, gold, apricot, red, brown and black, and most of the other colors seen in Poodles.

Like most Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, Labradoodles are generally friendly, energetic and good with families and children (although as with any dog the temperament may vary between individuals). Labradoodles also often display an affinity for water and the strong swimming ability present in both their parent breeds.

Like their parent breeds, both of which are amongst the world's most intelligent dog breeds, Labradoodles are very intelligent and quite trainable.

Your rescue pups are wonderful. I have to be careful here, so I will be very polite. I do think President Obama broke a promise. There are shelter dogs that do not cause allergies. My shelter dog "Bo" would rather have had his namesake be another rescue pup. Saving the life of a dog in a shelter would have been a wiser choice for Mr. Obama. Whew, it was hard to reply nicely. I am spent.

And a good question...Will they actually put Bo in the "traditional" haircut or a Portuguese Water Dog? I still think they should have gotten a hairless Chinese Crested if they were worried about allergies, but maybe that's just me since I have one :D

A great lens! Slaughterhouses contribute to at lest 30% of greenhouse gases and are a huge part of the problem our planet is facing. Please all consider switching your pet to a strict vegetarian diet. It's specism to "love" one kind of animal and to enslave and murder another to feed it. My own beloved rescue dalmatian passed away this Good Friday after 14 years on a strict veggie diet and thrived on it.

Just another mouth for the taxpayers to feed. But then again, the president had to meet the "wants" and not the needs....This dog will be feed (not like the homeless, from leftovers from a dumpster behind a fast food restaurant.)the best of choice foods. Will get the best of health care (not like half our USA citizens who get NONE) will be groomed regularly and will have a bed to sleep in with a roof over it's head. (Nothing like the cardboard box some have to call "home") And all this will be paid for by YOU and all other taxpayers. Don't get me wrong I love dogs and all other pet animals, I just don't see how he could ignore the needs of our vets and homeless. I would rather my tax dollars help them FIRST.

Nice lens. Sounds like President Obama actually saved Bo from going to a pound and being a shelter dog. So I think he still kept his promise by adopting Bo. I don't think a home is a home unless you've got a pet in it. Pets add so much to the home environment. It's great to see the President's daughters with a furry companion.
