Five Charities That Really Help Children

Updated on October 6, 2014

I'm the owner of the FightCPS website. I'm concerned about false accusations of child abuse and neglect, and the children involved.

Everyone Loves the Idea of Helping Children, But Which Charities Really Reach Them?

Charities that help children are at the top of my list when it comes to donations. There's nothing more compelling than a sick, injured, or under-educated child in need. I also love animal charities and charities for homeless people. Maybe a charity helping homeless children to interact with lovable pets would be the ultimate for me, but I haven't found that one yet.

Here are some great charities I've found that benefit children. I hope you'll find a charity that's deserving of your philanthropy here!

1. African Angel

This charity helps children in Accra, Ghana.

I was inspired to create this page thanks to Quirina, who wrote about Harriet, the African Angel.

The African Angel organization cannot help children everywhere, so they focus on helping children in the Bukom section of Accra, the capitol city of Ghana.

Harriet Bruce-Annan started African Angel to provide education, food, and care to needy children.

Their site states: "Our association offers to the parents of the children from Bukom living in poverty to accommodate their children in a protected home with regular meals, neat clothing and medical care."

There are more than six hundred children on the waiting list.

See their website: African Angel - Chances for Children.

To donate, send money via PayPal to info@african-angel.de

2. Covenant House

They provide shelter, food, and hope for runaways and other homeless teenaged children.

This is one of my favorite charities.

Covenant House helps children who are homeless -- with an outreach service that goes out to look for them on the streets.

Most specifically, Covenant House helps teenagers who are homeless and on the streets, including family-less former foster care teens who have aged out of the child protective services system and have been forced into the world without even knowing who their parents are.

These children really need help!

Here's the website: http://www.covenanthouse.org/

Help the Children

3. The Inner City Scholarship Fund

The Inner City Scholarship Fund provides educational help for impoverished New York City children.

This charity seeks out impoverished children in the NYC public school system, then gives them scholarships to local Catholic schools for a higher standard of education.

Their website: http://www.icsf-nyc.org

4. St. Judes Children's Research Hospital - Help sick children.

Learn more about the work of St. Judes Children's Research Hospital.

Their website: http://www.stjude.org

5. Operation Smile - Reconstructive Surgery for Children with Cleft Palates.

My son was born with Pierre Robin syndrome, which is a precursor to a cleft palate. I feel very lucky that he didn't need surgery.

Many children aren't so lucky, and they are born with a deformed upper lip and palate.

We can help them get the surgery they need to live a normal life.

Here's the website: http://www.operationsmile.org/

Please let me know about any worthwhile, trustworthy charities for children that I may have missed...

Your comments are welcome... - ...did I mention your favorite charity for children?

Hi Linda, thanks for adding my lens about Kesz Valdez here. It's really inspiring whenever we hear about organizations and people upholding the rights and welfare of children...and even more so when it's kids themselves who champion this cause.

You mentioned about how some organizations pay their execs hundreds of thousands of dollars, I think this is definitely something to watch for; The Christian Children's Fund of Canada (http://www.ccfcanada.ca) reaches out around the world to children in need, families and communities of all faiths to demonstrate Christ's love. This Canadian charity posts their financial statements on line so people can see exactly how their money is spent and how much goes to salaries and administration.

Oh my gosh, Linda! I did not know that African Angel and my lens were featured at the top of such a list on Squidoo! How sweet of you, thank you very very much! :) Things in Accra (this is where the children's home of African Angel is located) are running quite ok, as far as I can see. Another house is currently under construction, that will ultimately accommodate more children. It is being built at a pace of about one floor per year, and only when Harriet is present. Right now they're working on floor #3. But the ground floor is already in use! The children are doing there homework there, and it is used for different kinds of group meetings.

Once again, big thanks for your support, Linda!

PS: The English language web pages of African Angel are currently being brushed up. We are not quite finished yet, but there is a lot of new stuff to read already! :)
