Charity Dream House Raffles

Updated on May 27, 2013

About Charity House Raffles

This lens provides the public with general information for consumers, tips and a growing directory of reputable charity raffles nationwide.

In recent years, the popularity of long-time charity home raffles has created a "cottage-industry" of large, multimillion dollar charity raffles throughout the United States. For the nonprofit organization, large-scale raffles can offer the opportunity to raise large sums of money needed to provide necessary services. For the consumer, charity house raffles offer the opportunity to win multiple prizes including a home, cash, vacations, and more while knowing that proceeds are benefiting a charitable organization.

However, before you consider purchasing a ticket, be sure you understand the rules, the odds, have checked out the charity and made sure the raffle is properly registered. Below are some general tips to help you, as a consumer, protect yourself.

Below you will also find a listing of reputable, nationwide charity house raffles. In the coming months, I'll be adding additional raffles to the list.

Do your research

Before purchasing a ticket in a charity raffle, you should take certain steps to verify that the raffle is legal and that you understand the details of the prize system, costs and ramifications of home ownership.

  1. A good place to start is to verify that the raffle is properly licensed in the state or municipality where it is operating.

Laws vary greatly from state-to-state, but each state has regulations in place to protect consumers. Start with your states Attorney General's office or housing authority, they will be able to direct you to the appropriate agency overseeing raffle licenses. Additionally, you should be able to find the raffle license number and regulating authority in the official prize rules.

  2. Read the prize rules, this is important if you want to avoid a surprise. Although the grand prize may be a "Dream Home", most raffles offer additional prize package, early bird prizes and other incentives. In addition, charity house raffles typically contain provisions that if they fail to sell a necessary number of tickets, the prizes are reduced.
  3. Check to make sure that the prized house is under contract for purchase. Whether the charity has agreed to purchase the home, it has been donated, or is under "Option", the administrator or charity has signed a contract. Ask to see the contract, if they refuse to provide proof that they have an option or guarantee on the home, you should consider a different raffle.
  4. Taxes, taxes, and more taxes! The IRS considered the winnings from these types of raffles as fully taxable as income. So if you do win, be sure to be prepared to pay applicable sales tax, income tax and other state and federal taxes or fees. This is the primary reason that many winners choose a cash option when available.
