A Small Farm as Side Business for City People: Wisdom and Inspiration from My Family Tradition

Vegetables & Fruits Home Grown with a Container Garden for the supper table or as prelude to a side "back to land" side business near metro city

Intro: A Container garden in your own home, be it a single family, townhouse or an apartment life style can provide adequate space for an add-on garden for select vegetables and fruits.

I have some experience through family heritage relating to a small farm that my grandfather had purchased before my time in which my most memorable childhood was spent typically on a week-end or during holidays. I have heard family stories that my grandfather purchased such a farm as insurance when times were getting tough in the 30's with the onset of the Great Depression. At least, we could grow our own food for a large joint family as is my inheritance. In any case, in my childhood, times were not bad economically, in the 50's. .

My uncle worked for the railroad and during most week-end he went to the farm, on his bicyle from the city. Sometimes, he would take me with him to the farm sitting on the front on a 'child seat" when I had permission to go from my parents.

I remember the farm very clearly. My grandmother also lived at the farm sometimes and for me it was always fun to visit grandma at the farm. As far as I remember farm did provide some additional family food and may be even some income with fruits from the tree, fresh egges, and fish on the pond, or a few chickens, occasionally for the dinner table.

Those days chickens were a special treat as this is a farm not in USA but in India, located behind the airport in Calcutta. My cousin and I could sit for hours watching the planes take off and land. Or go fishing on the pond. Having pleanty of mangoes in season was a real value of having such a farm. For fishing, few of us cousins, always were trying to catch that old monster carp that lived in the deep. But we never succeeded beyond catching a few small fish once in a while.

I share this background with my readers because having a side business for those who appreciate the rural America life style but live in a metropolitan city can provide the consideration for a side business in growing vegetables and fruits for a local farmers market that can provide a supplemental income for the family today, provided one has handyman and/or green thumb skills beside having the motivation to sustain such a side business.

Such a business could be a good fit for someone who has taken an early retirement now in this difficult economic times in USA, or for a a young person who can't find a job but has the necessary prerequisite as I think would be necessary to be succeed in such a business if sustained with knowledge and motivation. The experience of a small scale container veggie and fruit garden thus can add the pre-requisite experience to such a family side business in near future. The pre-requisites skills are easy to test if not assured and the knowledge for having a side business is easy to acquire within a short time. .

Some households in Indonesia have already used this kind of fruit and veggie farming. It's not so complicated and the result is enough for the family. Nice thought.
