I'm living on the country side in Spain and here filtered water can't be taken for granted. To be honest, we do not have drinkable water from the tab, only irrigation water and rain water. Drinking water we buy in the stores or we go to the local spring. But there's not always a spring or store nearby.
If you're up in the mountains, having a picnic or a tour on the bike, it feels safe to have a pocket water microfilter with you. In emergencies we use the water purifier at home as well. It's not that I'm fussy about water, when I shower I use water from the irrigation network or rainwater tank, but when it comes to drinking water I prefer to drink pure and filtered water.
Portable water filters
eco-friendly purified water
Portable water purification devices - are also called "point-of-use" (POU) water treatment systems
and field water disinfection techniques - are used by hikers, bikers and bush walkers alike. They are also used in the military field and by survivalists and others who need fresh drinking water when they are in the countryside.
With portable water filters you can render unchlorinated water portable (which means, safe and suitable for drinking purposes). Nowadays there are many portable water filters or chemical additives (although personal I don't like these) on the market for camping and hiking and all of you who love to go and have trip out in the countryside.
The POU's are not only used in harsh conditions, no, as I told you, I use them at home as well to filter the water from the tap and have clean and pure drinking water on the diner table. It removes the chlorine, heavy metals (like mercury and lead ) and and other odors that sometimes can come with ordinary water from the tap and gives you fresh water instead.

The Big Berkey system
a simple water purification process
The Big Berkey system is the ideal system to have at hand. It's perfect for homes with medium sized families, a trip with a camper, outdoor activities or when the mains water runs out. This water system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from rivers, ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard to say it mildly. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor activities and a must in rural environments where electricity, water pressure or unfiltered water may not be available.

Our local canal - It definitely needs to be filtered
Yes guys, this is it. This is the local canal that runs along our house. We're now living in Spain for about 5 years and finally have irrigation water through a pipe system. But the first 3 years we had to siphon the water out this canal through tubes!!! To be honest, I didn't knew what the word siphon meant, before I went to Spain.
In the first years we lived here, we could not drink the water, and we absolutely needed a water filter if we wanted to use the water for brushing our tooth and cooking etc. One day when the canal was dry again I stumbled upon a dead goats head lying in the canal. Right!!!
I could have expected such a thing because there are a lot of shepherds around. Sooner or later a sheep had to fall into the canal and drown.
Well it was time for us to buy a water filter system and purify the water a bit.
But anyway, the Spanish local bureaucracy is very good at closing the water tap without notifying....and then it's quit possible that we do not have water for a week. Luckily we do have two tanks on the roof filled with water from the canal and rain water, in these emergencies, when the Spanish authorities decides to stop the dam. we still have water in the tanks.
In such cases it's a good feeling that we have a water filtering system at hand and we can still rely on rain water.

Unlike disposable filters, the ceramic element can be cleaned several times, even in the field. And the element filters all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns (0.0002mm), producing clear, drinkable water no matter where in the world you are.
