Eco Friendly Gift Wrapping

Updated on August 17, 2014

Learn how to have beautiful gifts AND a beautiful planet.

By wrapping with an eco-friendly flair you can save money and the environment. And the icing on the cake? Your gifts are stylish and one of a kind! Use items that you have on hand instead of buying paper and bows for specific occasions. Try lunch sacks, jars, cupcake liners, coffee mugs, maps, or felt to name just a few.

The possibilities are endless; check out some of my ideas ...

A Rosy Theme

Why waste a box & wrapping paper? Give items which share a common theme (roses were my choice) and tie with a piece of reusable tulle!

Have You Thought of Using a Mug for Your Gift Container?

I love using mugs because they are reusable and inexpensive. On this one I tied a handmade chocolate spoon and will add either a hot cocoa packet or cookies.

Making a Paper Cone ...

Paper Cones ...

Links to help you make cones like the one pictured above. These can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Keep eco-friendly sources of paper in mind -- used crossword puzzle pages, old maps, wallpaper remnants, etc.

A Touch of Vintage Sheet Music ...

I think this is a great example of a small bit of paper adding more elegance than a lot of paper. Sheet music is banded around taper candles. Simple and Eco-Friendly!

Fun with Felt ...

When I discovered eco-friendly felt squares I could hardly wait to use ( and re-use ) them for gift wrapping. Here are some ideas ...

Tuck something special in a Special Envelope ...

You can make these envelopes easily. They are cut, folded, and the sides hot-glued. You can decorate them as much or as little as you like. I use them for giving gift cards, earrings, and all sorts of small items; it makes me particularly pleased to hear people say they will reuse the cute envelope for another purpose.

An easy way to wrap cologne, candles, lotions, things in bottles ...

EcoSpun

EcoSpun felt is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and it's also allergy and animal cruelty free.

Wrap With a Map ...

as a romantic gift add a tag saying "you've found the way to my heart"

Clean out the glove compartment and take an outdated or unused map on a new journey. Most maps are large enough to use for wrapping books, clothing, and a number of items. The paper is a nice heavy-duty, non see-through material and is a good choice for recipients that are not into frilly packages. You can do as much, or as little, with the map as you like. This close-up shows an embellishment made from the map.

Eco Gift Wrapping on YouTube - Sew Easy

I picked up an old sewing pattern at the thrift store for 10 cents, and look what I made ...

Here Is My Pom-Pom On A Package ...

We simply rolled a ball from the pattern scraps and glued it in the center to give our pom-pom more of a flower style.

If you are a friendly eco-friendly soul, please say hello ...

      Hi SwankySoirees,

Thanks for your interest; the present wasn't difficult. Making the little fan bow obviously takes a bit longer than using a bow out of a bag. A happy medium would be tying the wrapped gift with a long ribbon that could easily be used again.

Thank you for stopping by squidoo.com/raining. I love your ideas for wrapping. Did you realize that you can iron used wrapping paper to use over again. It can also be used to cover blank books to make journals.

This is wonderful! I'm the person in my family who nags everyone at Christmas when they crumple up the wrapping paper and throw it in a pile. I've been coming up with clever ways to wrap gifts so I don't have to worry so much about that, and you've given me some great ideas! LOVE the pom poms. Thanks so much!

Great tips! It is so important to reduce all of the waste that is associated with something as wonderful as holiday gift giving! I am so passionate about "greening" the gifting process that I started my own little eco-gift wrap company last year. eWrapz (www.ewrapz.com) is reusable fabric gift wrap that is stylish and easy to use. Just another option for making gift wrapping more eco-friendly!

I love the mason jar ideas. They are so useful, sort of an additional gift. I often wrap items in maps. Great use for old maps. I use old posters, too. Great ideas.

These are great. My fortune-building father once wrapped our gifts in Sunday comics. I thought it was super-cool. Sisters were offended. All these will work... except for spendthrifts! lol.

Recently I gave my girlfriend her Birthday gifts (hand soaps, lip gel, scrubs, etc.) all placed in a beautiful CONE of Scrap Book Paper tied with an elaborate ribbon filled with tissue paper rolled into rosettes. Of course she thought they were flowers. She was Amazed at the gift and was surprised to find out that under all of that was the real treasure. All for only $10. Being Creative and Thrifty just takes some thought and LOVE. Plan ahead with your scraps and you will be amazed at what you can do. I surprise myself all the time.
