Volunteer in Ethiopia - Global Volunteer Network

Updated on July 10, 2014

Make a difference to the lives of children rescued off the street in Ethiopia

The Global Volunteer Network has opportunities for you to volunteer working with children and their community through our partner organization in Ethiopia. Volunteers will assist our partner organisation's mission to rescue children off the streets and give them a better life.

Ethiopia is an incredible country rich in tradition, culture, and varied landscape. Ethiopians are very welcoming and friendly to visitors, and is not a widely traveled area by tourists.

Our partner is a Christian organisation which was founded in 2004 by a group of concerned locals who saw the plight of street children in and around Addis Ababa. Currently they run a home for children ranging from 5 to 14 years old. They are completely dependant on volunteer support and donations to keep the organization running and hope in the near future they will be able to bring in ten more children.

GVN serves you to arrange an affordable volunteer opportunity with peace of mind, finanical security, and is a great way for you to contribute to the global community, gain experience, and also fosters personal growth.

Our vision is to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries through the placement of international volunteers. We believe that local communities are in the best position to determine their needs, and we provide volunteers to help them achieve their goals.

What You Can Do!

Volunteers will be involved in tutoring children after school with a focus on conversational English, grammar, science, and mathematics.

Additionally, volunteers with musical and computer skills are needed to instruct the children in these areas.

Volunteers need to be able to develop new and creative projects, as well as techniques for instructing children with special needs.

In addition, volunteers will work in staff development, finance and accounting, computer training, and/or grant writing.

Once a week volunteers have the opportunity to serve at a local feeding center where meals are provided to the street community, a large percentage of who are children.

Feedback on the Ethiopia Progam

Here are some of the emails we have received from volunteers about their experiences in Ethiopia.

"And so it began; our relationship with eight incredible boys. Eight boys who had experienced more in their seven to fourteen years that we had in twenty-eight and twenty-six. Each with an incredible story of living on the street and begging for food for their entire lives so far."
