What's the biggest threat to the United States of America today?

I vote it's the political divide entrenching. Nobody expects a civil war—not even me.

The biggest threat to the USA today are  those who are currently in power who are working hard to take away the liberties and freedoms awarded to you as a citizen under the Constitution of The United States of America.  If they suceed, these are things you will never have again and neither will your children or their children.  The threat is here, it is now, and it is very real.  As voters, we have the opportunity to stop it at the present....very soon, that too may go away.  Listen up in class and you will see. People who don't understand how much we have already lost and how much more those in power are trying to take from us.

If we don't stop the downward spiral this next election the greatness of this country will have passed into history.

My friend we are headed to what KFlippin has said orchestrated poverty and dependence.  If this goal of those now in control is achieved it will be nearly impossible to get our country back. Because those how are dependent will need to government for support. This is the left wings agenda as I have witnessed and seen it in action

The biggest threat is our dishonest statesmen controlling a nominally two-party system because our uneducated, apathetic populous unquestioningly accepts the lies and half-truths of our corrupt media.

The biggest threat to the United States of America, today in my opinion is: the very worry about what is the what the greatest threat is. As far as external "threats" -- not likely as we still, despite 9/11, live with a level of security that other nations couldn't even dream of.

I believe the same thing applies internally -- a kind of national hypochondria.

I guess its Christianity. You can't be an American President unless you are a Christian - preferably "born again" (sic). This puts the American Empire into the hands of a bunch of red neck Christian extremists, making America like Afghanistan - run by people whose weird ideas are based on superstition, not reason. This is a recipe for disaster.

And our government allow it.the government is going after ALL WALK OF LIFE. THE PEOPLE WHO THOUGH THE WAS RICH AND ALL UNDER. may the American people wake up and see what happening

I would say the biggest threat to the United States of America are new developing and BRIC nations. Currently the United states holds a position of the world leader and the most powerful country in the world since world war II.

The BRIC nations are compsoed of Brazil, Russia, India, China. The developing nations projected to overtake the G8 nations and develop new central points of power

Currently China is in a position to overtake the united states by 2027. After just passing the Japan as the second largest economy it has proven it is heading towards prosperity, by tripling its GDP over the past 5 years, and only being in stage 2 of development.

If China overtakes the United States it will only be a matter of time before the United States gradually falls from power to development and reach a position like the previous world powers, France, England, and Germany.

In my opinion, it's the steady dilution of our sense of self, as a nation. Ironically, what made this country great shall be it's undoing. We are, and always have been, a great "melting pot" of culture, religion, and ideology, but just as the Romans found out right at the end, in the rampant acceptance and tolerance of every school of thought, pure culture becomes unobtainable, and an empire looses its sense of self. It's fall will ensue, as with the crumbling of the fortress of tradition, conflict comes from within and without, consuming the values on which it was originally founded, and replacing them with anarchic perversion. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

    Divided We Fall.
ALL Americans need to step back and reconsider what we are yelling about nowadays.
It is really not my concern if you are gay.
It is really not my concern if you eat pork.
It is really not my concern if you are a muslum.
My concern is that we are being divided and sub divided while the banks steal our land.
We are baing divided and sub divided while the politicians steal our 'life, liberty and persuit of happiness'.
We are being divided and subdivided while corporations and insurance companies steal our right to appropriate medical care.
We are so distracted by what our neighbers are and have every right to do that we cannot see what the real problems is.
Stand up, unite, embrace each other's differences, pat each other on the back when we are brave enough to make a politically incorrect statement, loudly.
Picket the courthouse when your 9 year old gets arrested for childhood fantasy games.
We shake our heads, than forget these things.
    We Are Losing.

We are! If we divide ourselves because of race, political views or religion, we start fighting with each other. People become extreme and less tolerant of others.

The biggest threat to the US is the US.

Most of our seriously bad problems are from ourselves:

Our foreign policies shoots ourselves in the foot, and as for trade policy, we seem to slowly forget how to export anything in this country while we buy anything we can from another country as a population just because its cheaper.

It appears to be that we will be the last nation on the planet to rid ourselves of fossil fuels, we are already its most dependent buyer.

Educationally we continue to fall behind the developed world.

And if nothing else gets us our national debt will.

I agree. It's the political divide. People have held different political views forever since the founding. That's not unusual. In fact, it's normal.  But what we're seeing today is something else. I think we're in the midst of an ideological Civil War, and I wonder how long it will go on before it gets violent. We have people advocating the overthrow of this government. There's a real effort to allow emotionalism overtake reason, and it has dangerous consequences. A guy running for president, is calling the current president, a psychopath. Seriously? I'm sure that plays well with certain elements, of the electorate, but, WTF?? This is a guy that said that Obamacare is the worst thing in America since slavery. He seems to forget about the racial terrorism that took place in the country after Reconstruction, with lynchings, and mutilations, and castrations, and burning people alive. And this candidate is Black. The divide is fueled by extremism on the right. We condemn the extremism found in religion, especially with Islam, but we fail to call it out right here in America. The media reports on this stuff, but they do it more because some outrageous statement  makes the news, rather than calling it out for what it is. They fail to engage these extremists and challenge them on what they say and what they advocate.

Unemployment & poverty.  The middle class is constantly shrinking because of downsizing & the continual outsourcing of jobs overseas.  Replacement jobs are oftentimes low wage jobs.  More & more highly skilled & highly educated people are either becoming unemployed or underemployed. The middle class is becoming either the new poor or the new rich, depending upon education/skill set levels & other fortunate/unfortunate circumstances.   With the increase in computerization & automation, EVEN MORE people will become disenfranchise & impoverished unless they continuously revamp their education & skill set.

This thread supports what Ken B. said in that it reveals ways in which America has been unraveling for a very long time.

Maybe its starting to fix itself. I think we are evolving quickly, becoming more aware of what is good and just, as we revisit common sense.
... And strangely enough, this quickening is happening thanks to our current president, who seems be crumpling like a little wad of old newspaper before our very eyes!
