Should Wales be an independent country?
wales is a nation to the West of England and, like England, is a part of the United Kingdom. Wales has it's own ancient language and culture. There is a tendency towards independence within Wales. Anything CAN happen, the question is; SHOULD it happen?
Yes, Wales should be liberated from England and England should be liberated from Scotland, Ireland and Wales, they are all different people groups and will better govern themselves, we don't have warring Kings any more, time we had our own countries.
Thank you Aquasilver; Good points, but isn't Cornwall, Yorkshire, Geordieland and Cumbria also different people groups? would your argument make them independent also?
Why not, I had not thought that far, but it's logical and smaller government on a more localised level will always be better for most aspects of sovereignty, with the exceptions of national (UK) defence possibly and international trade.
There is a big difference between Wales and Yorkshire Geordieland and cumbria although there are still remaains of the old language spoken in that region the majority (even them who can speak it) consider themselves English
I agree with Agusilver. It would be interesting to watch the shift in populations if that were to happen!
There are economic, legal, cultural, military and other issues that need to answered first. Primarily -- the question as to whether or not the People of Wales want independence. Then there are the logistics of government and the economic realities. Wales needs a Constitution and a military. People WANT a lot of things, but is what they want an emotional desire or a relevant objective? This is a much more complicated issue than a simple yes or no. But the bottom line, just as with Ireland, if the people want independence then they need to devise a rational plan to achieve the objective.
Thank you for your answer and you make good points. Welsh Nationalists rarely get more than 10% support, hence "tendency" you express the mechanics of separation eloquently but the question of SHOULD still is unanswered.
iantoPF -- point taken. Any nation of people that desire freedom based on their own culture and other factors SHOULD be free to choose and that includes Wales. Thanks -- its a good question.
I'm from Wales and one of the most annoying thing we hear is "Wales is a part of England" it is not, we like England are a part of the UK which is governed by the "british" government..and a constitutional government in Cardiff...
Personally I support Welsh independence, being part of the UK has never done us any good! It has made us look weaker and instead of a country we are like a region.. I like to see Wales and England working together as allies rather than working for an old union that makes no sense..
I made a video presentation on YouTube about why I support independence also includes advantages from a few reseach I made online... Every country has the right to self determination without the interfearence of others..

Excellent video, maybe a tad long to keep the attention of people only mildly interested in the cause.

Should Scotland become an Independent Country?I am interested in what the Hubpages community thinks about this. Especially with the referendum coming up next year.

Seeing that the Scots are to have a referendum in two years time, which is likely to see Scotland leave the United Kingdom, which will I have no doubt lead to a similar vote in Wales, I wonder if it is a good or bad thing that the United Kingdom should disappear from the world map. What...

What would happen if Congress were 100% Republican?I mean this as a serious question. Consider it a thought experiment. If you want, you can spout the usual political dogma of your party, but give it some real thought and then respond. Try not to give pat answers. And I'll ask this same question,...
