Do we know enough about Romney's faith?

Has Romney answered important questions about his Mormonism?  Does he believes his churches teaching that women are subservient creatures, that blacks are inferior souls, or that, other than his fellow Mormons, all Christians are Satan worshipers?  Has he clarified if he still believes that God speaks through the president of the Mormon Church, who must be obeyed totally and blindly on all matters - even by the president of the United States?

Well, if one would read about the origins of Mormonism, you might come to the conclusion that it is a whacky cult. John Smith, the founder, got a visit from an angel named 'Moroni' when he was out in the woods, and the angel gave him special goggles to read a set of tablets with text explaining how Jesus came to the Untied States to talk to the indians before white men came. Some of the curious oddities included that women can't get into heaven unless they are married to a Mormon man, and if you wear special Mormon made underpants, it helps protect you from doing nasty sexual things. Of course, he did all of this reading-with-goggles and talking to the angel inside a special tent, so no one else actually saw the goggles or tablets, or heard the angel speaking....and the stuff he dictated from the tablets to a guy outside the tent who wrote it down sounds suspiciously like stuff already in the New Testament, but rephrased....so you decide: was Mr. Smith crazy? High on mushrooms he found in the forest? A clever con-man? And, do you want a president that buys into that?

It's where the expression, "Talking into your hat" came from. His "goggles" were 'majick' stones that glowed when he stuck his face into his top hat and recite the 'translated' text of a "gold book" that was then transcribed as he BS'd his way 2 fame

Exactly.  Smith also wanted to be president.  Its like the church of PT Barnum.

Why judge him by his faith when his actions speak so loudly? He sits on a huge pile of gold, while his neighbors starve. What else needs to be said about what kind of a man he is? Faith is very rarely anything but what we use to justify the thing that we truly are.

Comparing Romney's record of charitable acts with that of Obama, one reaches a rather different conclusion about the characters of the two men.

I don't care that he has the pile of gold. What I care is how he got it, and it seems that Bain Capital in being investigating for tax evasion with other companies doing the same thing.

Are you talking about Democrat New York AG Eric Schneidermann's surprise claim that what has long been generally accepted as a fully legal method of reporting investor fees is suddenly an illegal tax dodge? Well. Isn't that politically convenient?

He even short changes his church that expects 20 percent.  One of the hidden treasures in his tax return and in the Cayman Islands is money "owed" to the Mormon church.

Since when do we question somebody's religion in the United States? If I am not mistaken the United States Constitution is against the establishment of a "state church" it is not against anyone's personal religion.

Personally I don't really care for religion in general, and so far Romney, although he has a lot of faults, did not push his religion down anyone's throat...

He probably will not be among my circles of friends, and he will not be my candidate, but nor for his religion, but for the rest of his qualities, or lack of...

You're joking right?  John F. Kennedy had to assure the American people that he would not blindly follow the pope.

What amazes me is that the Democratic Party and its media artillery corps, which traditionally lay sanctimonious claim to the high ground of religious and ideological tolerance, are now mounting an assault on Mormonism in an attempt to discredit Romney.

Wait a moment. I have to take that back. It doesn't really amaze me at all. I've seen the same hypocrisy from progressives a thousand times before now. Saying one thing while doing another is just part of the character of the left.

I don't really think that the media is mounting and assault on Mormonism. Actually if they were to say something they would have said about Ryan's affiliation with the Catholic Church... For the past few years, Catholics had some sexual problems...

Isn't lying a sin in these religions?  That's what bothers me the most.  Also the lack of values.  Any variant of Chrisitianity and other religions (cult and mainstream) for that matter puts value on taking care of the poor.  Not so in today's GOP .

The Democratic Party's de facto abandonment of its principle of religious tolerance for the tactical purposes of the 2012 presidential campaign is a measure of how low it has fallen under the rule of the Obama political machine.

Mormonism is not secret, research it.  It is unique to say the least. To say more would be....well starting some conflict, so I will use the word unique.

I suggest the excellent book "Under the banner of heaven" which contains a very engrossing account of the origins of this cult.

This question is really grasping at straws...There are various sects of Mormonism as there are sects of christianity.  There are even sects within sects within most every faith.  Not all Catholics are Roman Catholic.  To lump anyone person into every aspect of their faith is simply ignorant.  Many people belong to a chruch and don't recognize all the teachings. Myself as a Catholic differ with my church on numerous issues.  Then again I disagree with my wife on numerous issues.  Many faiths have had teachings that have evolved with different interpretations over time. Do the 500k black members of the mormon church believe that they are inferior ???

Catholics believe that the Pope is capable of communicating with God on a more spiritual level than the rest of the population.  Should we then have called into question the religious views of JFK ???

Should we assume that because many muslims strictly adhere to Sharia Law that we should call into question someone of muslim faith that has never espoused such views ???

I once worked for a company that had it's corporate training programs in Salt Lake City.  As a result I was forced to spend large amounts of time there and had met many mormons. I will admit that I often poked fun at them initially out of ignorance of what they were like.  There simply weren't many Mormons growing up in NYC public schools.  While I am a Roman Catholic with no interest in converting, I found them to be some of the most polite friendly and charitably giving people I have ever come across. Whether or not that is a result of the church or more middle America values, I don't know.

You don't have to agree with Govenor Romeny on policy.  But he has shown himself to be a very charitable individual with his money and his time. Someones faith is a deeply personal issue.  As President, the only issue that matters in terms of faith is whether or not he observes and respects the seperation of Church and State.  The purpose of this seperation was to provide individual religious freedom, and prevent the Gov't from forcing the population to pay taxes or dues to a church.  To my knowlege, I have never heard Gov Romney suggest that the American people be forced to join the Mormon faith or that the LDS church begin to collect tax revenue from the American people.

Why would you belong to a religion that you don't agree with?  Personally I don't trust anyone that I can't sit down and have a beer with, let alone a cup of coffee.

I belong to the catholic church and don't agree 100% with them on everything.  Does every married couple agree 100%.  If you live your life that restrictively, you'd be a lonely person.  I am quite sure Gov Romney has sat for a beer.

'Catholics believe that the Pope is capable of communicating with God on a more spiritual level than the rest of the population. '  Then they do not understand their own denomination. Nowhere in Catholic dogma does it state that to be true.

    4. LandmarkWealth profile image67
LandmarkWealthposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I did not say it was in scripture.  It is a generally accepted principal that the Pope is believed to be essentially perfect in ruling on matters of faith. Yet many catholics don't agree inclduing myself.  That does not mean I wish to leave the faith

    5. krillco profile image84
krillcoposted 12 years agoin reply to this

A Pope has not spoken anything new in the mode of infalibility for well over 100 years, though all have repeated past statements. And infalibility does not mean the the POPE is perfect.

    6. LandmarkWealth profile image67
LandmarkWealthposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I never they have spoken of much new. The belief is perfect in matters of "Faith".  Not perfect as a person. The point is simply that this is an example of one of many beliefs that many practicing catholics do not hold. Yet they still belong to faith

How can it possibly be ok to question Romney's faith while just blindly accepting that Obama is a good Christian? That's just blatantly biased and stupid. At least Romney doesn't lie about his faith, nor does he try to convert the rest of us. He'd rather just actlike a good Mormon than try to force us to accept his beliefs as our own. Give him a break.

Part of the deal with LDS is that little thing about overthrowing the US government and 'bleeding the beast' which I would consider Romney a quiet assassin of American democracy - the enemy within that we must protect ourselves from. But being an Mormon is not that bad. There are plenty of worse extremist & anti-government groups. Hey! At least he is not the ex-Grand Master of the KKK like David Dukes in 1996.

But I do have a problem with Mittens.

Romney is a freaking sociopath. Leaving a poor wet shivering dog that he hosed down after it got sick being on top of his car for hours in Canada. What a sicko!

Consider that the game Romney is playing is unlikely to be conjunctive to faithful, reasoned principals.  Rather, in his manic quest for power, he is more likely to fellate ideals that will bring him positive opinion polls, status, media adoration and respect through subservience to particular lobbies, groups and countries.  I think Romney would rather 'play to the Gods' so to speak than conduct a personal quiet dialogue with his God.  But we shall see hey?  Good question by the way.
