Is it fair that public schools deny same sex public display of affection (Like Holding hands etc..)?
As our children are entering into high school they know what choices they have made. One being there chosen sexuality. Is it fair that our public school system will stop any types of public display of same sex affection while allowing opposite sex affection or is this consider a case of discrimination?
In my opinion anytime you make special rules for one type of people it IS discrimination. Really though why should PDA be allowed in school at all?
All of my schools had a no PDA rule, period. Regardless of what gender the participants were. If schools have rules that specifically state that only same sex couples can't have PDA, then that is discrimination.
However, if you haven't seen the rules, and a child told you this, there could be a possibility that they've stretched the truth a little. I know, I regularly did as a teenager to make my parents think what I wanted or needed them to think.
There's also the possibility that perhaps the teachers enforce the rules more strictly with same sex couples.
"there (sic) chosen sexuality"
First, let's stop this thinking because straight people are the biggest (in numbers) offenders of this. While it is true that kids are more likely to "experiment" with their sexuality, their ultimate "choice" is not a choice at all.
Second, should minors be allowed to show sexual affection publicly? Do adults behave this way? If they do, what are the accepted consequences? I would venture to say adults transgress in this way rather rarely. Why would there be a double standard here for minors?
Yes. School districts do have the right to dictate behavior ----just as the workplace regulates adults. I would not propose a "zero tolerance" policy because they don't work but I would propose a reasonable one. If straight boys and girls can hold hands (which is rather innocuous), why not their counterparts? But as adults, we should recognize, define and resolve issues of harrasment and bullying instead of getting weird about such issues.
They should be banning it for everyone. You're there to learn...Not get lucky. Obviously you'll meet people and form bonds. But there is not need to ever display sexuality for the world to see in school or any other public forum. Keep your private life private. I really don't care to have to explain to my 5 year old why it is that hetro or homo couples are slobbering all over each other in any public place. They already see too much
I think that is perfectly fine. Those rules are there for a reason and they help teens from making mistakes. I agree with the rule.
Schools that I am familiar with do not allow ANY PDA between any couples. PDA's have gotten out of hand so the admin. puts a stop to it.
The rules have to apply to everyone or they're discriminatory. If the faculty allows same sex couples to hold hands, etc, they shouldn't stop homosexuals from doing the same thing.
