Is "under God" in the American Pledge of Allegiance appropriate?
Yes, people may argue this nation was not founded under God, but there is the proof. Plus it is on our currency as well.
Of course our forefathers wanted separation between church and state. But, people get this wrong in this day and time. This was to give all people to have the rights to worship freely without concerns of Government interference. Not the other way around.
I think the government has to stay out of religion altogether, and that means they can't make references to either the existence of a god or lack thereof.
That is the sad thinking of "now." Not then when our forefathers really knew how much freedom of religion meant.
'Under god' was added to the pledge in the 1950s. And you're right, the founders wanted people to have the freedom to worship whatever they want. But a pledge that says 'under god' is government interference with personal religion.
It is not appropriate to have 'under god' in our pledge of allegiance. The pledge is a patriotic declaration to the United States, not god. It violates the first amendment and forces non-theist families into the role of 'outcast' or 'other'. The only reason it's allowed to continue is because Christianity is still the dominant religion in this country. If the pledge said 'under Allah' people would be marching on Washington until it was changed.
Yes. This nation was founded, even though some would hate to remember it. Our founders placed that saying on our currency and in our pledge of allegiance because it is our right and their goal to separate church and state so we could have the right to worship and have our own choice of religion. They fled their country so they could worship God in their own way, so this saying is literal.
The founders did not place 'in god we trust' on money or 'under god' in the pledge. They were added long after the constitution was written.
Good. We were actually paying attention to what we are founded on.
