      My recollection is that it's not customary for American presidents to personally go to the sites of disasters in other countries. If I were his adviser, I would advise him to stay here and make sure we are taking every reasonable step to help the victims of the disaster.

    ill share this with you i did not vote for obama but in 2012 i will . despite his performance. just as i did for bush. . i voted gore the first time. but bush the second . reason being i give my presadents 8 years  . thats how i vote thats how i roll . so im betting ill lose in 2012 by voteing for obama

    I think it is all but common knowledge there is a huge double standard in politics on both sides.  We endured 8 years of it with the Bush administration.  Now before I'm labled a "Bush hater".  I don't feel he was Satan's brother.  There is some good that came out of his administration.  I can't help but feel sometimes the entire political machine is at a point of nowhere.  We want Obama to come up with quick and easy fixes for everything. A year into his presidency some are ready to throw him to the wolves, beacuse the country is not perfect by now.  Is he an easier target because his ethnicity?  Does this make his critics more harsh towards him?
    Why expose Reid's comments now?  At a time when the president needs unity within his own party, this will surely create tension and more distrust. Is it so much concern the public has the right to know, or is this a perfect time to create more turbulence within the democratic party.  Every action in Washington is calculated.  Is it possible actions such as these are more self serving than geared towards public interest. These were idiotic comments made by a supposedly intelligent, well informed individual. Its happened numerous times before; Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, the list is long and distinguished and yet again someone's "true colors" comes to surface.

    Arthur you tricked me into a possibly losing bet! :-) I see from something I read today that Reid is facing stiff opposition which has nothing to do with his tactless remark about Obama bur rather from a couple of Republicans and a bunch of tea partiers. I don't recall the source, but it said that he may well lose the election.

                To believe Reid did something wrong in talking about that is to buy the silly contention that talking about race is, of itself, racist. The morally malleable Michael Steele knows better. He also knows full well that Trent Lott's sin was to suggest America would have been better off had an arch-segregationist been elected president in 1948.That's not close to what Reid did.

       Lott was speaking to a 100 year old at his birthday party.  It would be normal to try and say nice things about the man at his birthday.  No one can say exactly what Lott meant any more than they can Reid.

          Lott's and Reid's remarks are in no way equivalent. Moreover, it was the GOP, not the Dems who ousted Trent Lott in an unsuccessful appeal for black votes.
          
          Paul Gottfried:  "It is also the case that pace Sarah Palin, it was the Reps, not the Dems, who "immolated" Lott, in the words of Dan McCarthy, as a propitiatory offering to blacks. Dan has further observed in an email note to me that "Lott’s head on a pike did nothing to help George Allen [the liberal Republican politician who lost the black vote badly in the Virginia senatorial race in 2006]."
          
          "But such a useless strategy can be continued because until now it has done nothing to drive away most of the white Republican core. In the South more than elsewhere, the GOP has become the white party, as opposed to the Democrats, who attract almost every black vote. Presumably being a Republican, no matter what the party leaders say, identifies the party loyalist as a white Southerner. One might also observe, as Lew Rockwell has many times, that the South is full of military installations and disproportionately represented among military forces. Given such a connection, white Southerners with fading historical memories don’t seem to care about supporting a party that condemns the display of Confederate flags and praises the glories of Reconstruction. After all, the GOP is good at providing military build-ups and military engagements. "

    The best part to me is....we don't have to worry about Harry Reid.  He's gone in November anyway and, I've never paid much attention to the ramblings of fools.  Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Rangel, Dodd, Clinton (either one), and throw in Obama.  Does any thinking, objective observer really believe these people know what they're doing???? or, are they simply following a predetermined agenda?  When responding, please don't quote me any talking points will ya.
