Wow. This is the first time I've read this forum category, and I swear my blood pressure has got to be twice as high as it was before I started reading.
I'm banning myself from this entire topic. It's sad, because I had some ideas I wanted to share from a liberal and inclusive viewpoint, but I can already tell I'd just feel really hurt and upset by some of the responses I'd get.
I'll leave you with these questions: Why is it so important to have a thick skin on the internet? Who made that rule? Who does it benefit?
I have tried...but it keeps dragging me back in
I learned my lessons a long time ago and came back to try again only to relearn the same and new lessons; and here I am again.....at least this one isn't a debate or asking my opinions.....
This is something that my husband and I have been talking about a lot lately--in fact, we both wrote hubs about it, lol...
Some folks seem to think that this "virtual world" isn't real, so they can be as rude or disdainful as they want.
Well, gee--REAL people sit at these keyboards and type out these responses, not "virtual" people...real people have feelings that get hurt in any place, virtual or real.
Why is it so hard to be respectful? Honestly, it's much easier on the blood pressure to be nice...and if someone comes at you in a rude way, just ignore them or "kill them with kindness"...that works everytime!
You caught on pretty darned quick!
I could cite you example afer example of people who seem to be sparring along nicely and suddenly one or the other goes over the line. People rally around the injured party (whose skin is NOT really all that thick) and denounce the other one. That person may also spend periods of time banned from the forums.
In other words, you're hardly the first person to feel this way.
If you are still interested in sharing your views on politics, write a hub, instead. You may still attract detractors, but you get to write and enforce the rules cuz it's your hub!!
Yes, that's the best way. You have more control over what goes on in comments than in a forum! Just be sure to set your comments capsule so you have to moderate all comments before they appear.
I know what you mean. It seems like it's impossible to have a civilized debate in either the political or religious forums. I ignore them these days.
Useful information. Dont participate in aggressive topics, write a hub about it. Thank you
I find some of the discussions are great food for thought but I refrain from participating for just the reasons you, Mighty Mom and Marisa cite. However, I would also say that reading some people's opinions and then some of their hubs, shapes the way I think about them and whether I value their opinion or whether I prefer to discount it - you certainly get a different slant on some issues than what we are fed by the BBC in UK!
Celebrate difference in opinion and choose who's viewpoint you adopt but don't let it taint your experience.
Discourse is the mortar of understanding that will help you cement your views. Sometimes discussion gets personal because people are passionate about their beliefs and that's okay, if you remember the purpose of debate is so you better understand your position, not to convince others to change their beliefs.
I pick and choose carefully if I want to post something, and yes, you need thick skin, or what I call, 'who gives a $#@&'. we all should be able to say what we want to say without being told we're wrong. and there are those who feel they know everything, so they will tell you your opinion is wrong, which I find ridiculous (humorous).
just feel your away around, as some have said here, sometimes bringing in another veiwpoint helps us understand why we believe what we believe. I like what leeberttea said about not trying to convince others to change their beliefs.
welcome to HP and enjoy it. writing hubs is also a great way to express a viewpoint and it's part of your profile.
btw, where is Sab Oh?
I try to avoid religious discussions, but sometimes I chime in, although not too much.
I enjoy these debates and the religious ones, but if you're easily hurt or get upset when someone takes an opposing view and just will not accept what you say... stay out..
Personally I don't give a damn what others think or say, they are as entitled to their opinions as I am as misguided and as stupid as they may be.. It is not my personal mission to change them all and make them conform to my thinking...
As to the personal attacks, just laugh them off as it just shows that the person is incapable of making rational debate and has to resort to being a b1tch!!!! lol...
Any thread that upsets you in any way.. get out and stay out.. best for the sanity and health!!!!
I find some of them a bit wearing and depressing - so I limit myself. But I do believe that people should have the right to express their opinion
Yeah and I need to stay out of the girls dormitory, but something always keeps pulling me back...
Don't despair because that's what makes the world go around.
Just tell it the way you see it and some hubber will reply with their view of the subject.
Write the truth as you know it ,a good debate is good for the soul
Looking forward to some great hubs, and an opportunity to voice my opinion.
'' the truth can set you free ''
this really is very funny! thanks kerry.
we all have to keep our sense of humor.
