Hi M’lady. I found this article informative. Thanks for posting the link. By the end of this opinion piece, I realized it was mostly dire predictions and scare tactics from another medical practitioner.  This time a plastic surgeon that invests in health-care companies. I’m looking for an independent, unbiased source on this subject, one with verifiable facts instead of hasty conjecture. Do you know of any?  Thanks for your input.

You should read Atul Gawande's articles in the New Yorker for informed commentary on health care issues. I'll try to find a link.

Here's his most recent article, "The Hot Spotters"

Who better than he to report on the problems with healthcare? I have many doctors in my family some that work in prestigeous hospitals like the Mayo Clinic, and none of them are entheusiastic about Obamacare.

That's a pretty foolish thing to say... NOBODY has an interest to see Obamacare fail!
Who wouldn't be for more and better health care coverage at a lower cost? The problem is. Obamacare doesn't meet those objectives and it does so while violating the constitution! It expands government and no surprise that means more public service union members paying dues to democrats! Frankly I believe that's ALL Obamacare does!

The eventual move towards the public option is well underway.  The rising costs are being seen more clearly now and the 2014 deadline for mandated health insurance is looming as the major healthcare insurers consolidate to increase their base to cover the profit margin.

Many republicans who fought against the public option and thought they had secured a victory by making Obama take it out were so short sighted with their thinking and subsequent victory.

Folks, it is headed the way of universal healthcare and the building blocks are already set.

Instead of fighting against it could time better be spent making it work?

rhamsonposted 13 years agoin reply to this

With the recent change in congress I would say there might be a chance but unless the Republicans come up with more than scare tactics and just plain no there will be an eventual change they will not even be able to stop.

The fighting for one side over the other gives both sides nothing of which they want.  Obama used this and headed us towards the direction we are going.  Instead of meeting the problem in the middle Obama has been able to set the marketplace as the place where it will be decided.  Private healthcare will eventually become unprofitable for them and the government will pick it up when it is neccessary.

@ladylove158.  The writing is on the wall and the opposition has no new ideas to counter it other than a moral plethora of charges and innuendo.  The American voter has had enough of the republican line of lower taxes for the rich and cut services as the war cry for us all to fall behind.

The fact of the matter remains that just stopping Obama will not be the answer to the astronomical healthcare cost rising exponentially and until the rebublicans can offer a solution or a feasible presidential candidate the writing is on the wall.

Well, he scores 1 point for not mentioning "death panels."
Otherwise, this opinion piece is just that -- the opinion of someone whose INVESTMENT IN HEALTH CARE COMPANIES is being threatened.
Not sure why Dr. Krieger's panties are in such a bunch, however.
It's not like he's likely to be impacted in his own practice.
Private pay lipo and breast augmentations and tummy tucks will still be around. In fact, there may actually be MORE patients for Dr. Krieger. Once the healthcare bill kicks in for real, the people who are currently paying through the nose for health care premiums might even have some $ left over for a nose JOB lol!!

all i know is that my good friend cant get a hysterectomy untill she finds a way to pay for the surgury up front,... meanwhile she bleeds to the point of passing out at work,... and she cant afford to miss work or she'll loose her home,...

i never heard of having to pay up front before obama care,... us poor folk just made payments till the end of time.

its not politics on this one, i'm just saying what i see.

  5. Mighty Mom profile image75
    Mighty Momposted 13 years ago

stclairjack -- that is MESSED UP!
I have never heard of requiring payment up front. Payment at time of service, yes. But pre-paying a medical procedure as invasive as a hysterectomy?
BTW, not to play doctor or anything, but your friend's symptoms sound familiar to me. Is it possible she has endometriosis? That can cause extreme bleeding. It is also treatable in a couple of ways. One is a surgery called a lapyroscopy (sp?). It's basically laser surgery. There is also nasal spray they can give you that stops your periods for several months.
    I've had both treatments.
I only mention this -- not related to the cost of any of these -- but just they they are a lot less radical than a hysterectomy.
    ... I'm just sayin'.

How can Obamacare be effecting anything, when the law will not even go into effect until 2014? We don't even know if it will take effect at all, as there are several lawsuits trying to block it.
So, you know nothing will happen until those pass.

This is just more specualtion, and, once again, it is our wonderful stock market that is causing all this medical panic by rich doctors and investors. If you think the medical field is that risky to invest in, drop it, and invest in something else! Don't try to use your wallet to dictate to others what we should and shouldn't do.
If you don't like it! Quit!

That is what every corporation does to their employees when they make changes that nobody likes. If you don't like it. Leave!

"...if you don't like it, leave." I have read those exact same words in these forums. 100% of the time written by so-called American patriots suggesting (in no uncertain terms) that we so-called "socialists" don't deserve to live in this country and should move to Cuba or Europe.
I like your idea better, tho, brimancandy! Let THEM leave!

The most funny thing about all this is that a majority of people think that socialism in the United States is something new that is going to drastically alter our way of life. Not true.

Welefare is a social program. And, a lot of people who are on welfare get free medical care, and care for their children under the medicade program. You can only go to doctors that are medicade approved, and it has not slowed or changed the hospitals or care everyone receives one bit. the same could be said for those that are getting care through social security. Nothing new.

The care that our Veteran's get is also funded by the Gov. I know, because my brother has no income, and no insurance and he is getting the best care he can possibly get from the VA hospital. No different than socialism.

This whole scare tactic is brought on because insurance companies know that they will no longer be able to gouge the crap out america's pockets, and will have to lower premiums to compete. Nothing more.
And, politicians are sucking up to them by trying to block this care package so they can continue to back their biggest campaign contributers, which is the insurance lobby that screwed the Bush administration out of Billions in Aid, and then gave themselves raises with the money.

So, being so down in this socialism idea seems stupid to me, when the people who are bitching so much about it, continue to rip us off!

The government has been bailing out the wealthy for ages. Chrysler Corporation and the Savings and Loans under Reagan come to mind. But Conservatives don't talk about the Reagan-era bailouts because Reagan is meant to be the conservative poster boy who never did anything that today's conservatives wouldn't have liked.

Anyway, my point is that conservatives love socialism when it massively benefits a very few, but hate it when it minimally benefits a whole lot of folks.

A confusing paradox, but there it is...

Lady, it was a good article and I'm not really sure what to think about it.  Good business practices require economies of scale and no doubt O'bomb-o care caters to Big Health and the elimination of doctor-owned practices and the final result will be less of a relationship between doctor and patient.  But this is the tail end of the trend.  The HMOs which were put in place to reduced costs actually ended up in more bureaucracy for doctor practices, less time to see the patient and less earnings.  There is no easy solution.

To be fair it was an opinion piece but at least it was by someone that is directly affected. Obamacare foes a lot of things maybe even some of them good but there is no question it will destroy insurance companies leaving the government as a single payer, and it will reduce the amount of doctors in the business, while raising costs to the tax payers and further rationing care all while removing the consumer from the decision making process.
Did you see the guy in Canada whose decisions on care for his baby were taken away from him and given to a board of doctors that decided the breathing tube should be removed and the baby allowed to die? The same baby had previously been treated in MN and his health restored! I have no doubt that the arrogance of Obama and the democrats will lead to faceless bureaucrats deciding the fate of the sick... because they know what's best fir all of us right? They know what we should eat what light bulbs to use whether or not we should wear a seat belt how high to keep our thermostat and on and on!
