What Do You Understand by Freedom?
What is freedom? It is in any case, a word that appeals to many people and inspires them. For many people, freedom is a positive thing, something they want to pursue for themselves and others. Freedom is a word that is used in many contexts. Political actions are criticized on the grounds that they undermine the freedom of citizens. The revolution in Eastern Europe is seen as a step towards freedom. Guerrilla forces are trying to show that they are fighting on the good side to call themselves freedom fighters. The expulsion of the Iraqi state from Kuwait and resetting the old state is called liberation. People talk about a love relationship in which the freedom of both partners is maintained. But what exactly is freedom? In this article I will take a closer look. I believe there are at least five ways in which the word freedom is used. In the most general sense freedom refers to the capabilities in any situation out there that are free to choose (spiritual freedom). Second, freedom refer to the degree to which people respect the rights of others that give a certain freedom of action based on self-determination (civil liberty). Thirdly, freedom refer to having features (active freedom). Fourth, freedom refer to a social structure in which few other decisions about your take and have few obligations to others (social freedom). And finally, there is the freedom to do what you like without you yourself being limited by preconceptions of yourself and others about what can and should (personal freedom). I will discuss these five freedoms.
Spiritual freedom is the freedom to choose the options that you have. If you can take an apple or a pear, you are free to choose which of the two you want. So you possess as a human anytime spiritual freedom. Even if you have very limited options, you can always choose from the options what you want most. In the basic sense, you are never required to choose something. If someone gives you the choice between money or your life, and you choose the money, this is a free choice as to spiritual freedom. You would rather be robbed than to be slain, and why did you choose to give money. You also could choose death. You can discuss whether your spiritual freedom is as example, of experiencing a bout of mental disorders, or under the influence of spiritually intoxicating drugs.
Civil liberty refers to the degree to which people respect the rights of others that give a certain freedom of action based on self-determination. Not everyone agrees on what freedoms people should have and what exactly is the boundary between freedom and the freedom of the other. A possible ground rule might be: Everyone is free to do whatever he / she wants as long as he / she is not causing any other peaceful person damage (eg theft, abuse, environmental pollution). It follows that people have freedom of speech, the freedom to choose where they want to work, the freedom to spend their salary, etc.
Active freedom refers to having opportunities. You can speak of freedom to walk if you have two functioning legs. You can talk about the freedom to publish your opinion on a large scale, if you have television broadcast time. This kind of freedom could be call active freedom because it indicates what things you can actually do at any given time. In contrast, civil gives freedom that are not yet your actual possibilities at that given time.
Social freedom refers to a social structure in which few other decisions about your take and have few obligations to others. I mean the freedom associated with your voluntary social relationships with others.
Personal freedom is the freedom to do what you like without you yourself been limited by preconceptions of yourself and others about what can and should be. You own a lot of personal freedom if you care little what people think about you: Lets assume you’re a girl that does bodybuilding when you feel to do it, even if people find it weird.
