The gym is a godsend for many but as you age the exercises become too hard. Young people are generally nimble and able to make their muscles tone up with simple techniques, as demonstrated in the picture. But when the body is out of condition even this type of exertion is beyond you.

Sitting day after day at the computer or at a desk causes damage to muscles and the vascular and nervous systems that we are not always aware are happening. One day you suddenly find it hard to walk as your feet feel like they are frozen. Your back hurts with even gentle exercises and whereby you could one spend hours in the garden now pruning just a few roses is almost impossible.

There may just be a great solution and it is in video games, such as Wii. When I was introduced to this wonderful health promoter recently it literally made my day. My muscles will not tolerate a lot of exercise at this time in my life and damage to rotator cuffs and now my hip, after a fall from the arm of the lounge recently, means that unless something can induce me to exercise my preference now is to sit and type.

When Age Kicks In

My son and his family encouraged me to the Ten Pin Bowling Alley a couple of years ago. They had a great time knocking doen the pins but I could not even lift the ball let alone bowl it. That's when realisation hit that I am not as fit and something drastic has to be done. The doctor ordered tests but what do they know?

The answer was within me. Movement and exercise were vitally important but even a walk with the dog was becoming a major handicap. My little Minnie had a heart condition and to my relief the vet suggested walking her less, Of course that gave me an excuse to do less as well. Eventuially my little mate left me and now there is no reason to go trotting around the neighbourhood. Recently the shopping malls became a substitution for street walking but that was costing me a lot of money.

My eyes were not the best as well, The sight was hardly changed but now cataracts made it difficult and eventually they had to be operated on. Once that was over it gave me another excuse to work more on the computer than outside. That's when my body began to feel the real strain.

Consulting the doctors was one thing but paying their bills was quite another. The cost was stacking up, even though we have a national health scheme.

When the medical profession failed me it was time to try alternatives. The first was the chiropractor who used accupuncture and massage,. At $50 a visit and some 3 to 4 visits a week I was a long way out of pocket. But was it helping? She didn't actually jump on my back but sometimes it felt like it.

Lying motionless on the table for up to an hour with pins sticking in me everywhere became very tiring as well and ocasiionally sleep took over. It was then a shock when she suddenly appeared again and woke me up. After several weeks of this treatment it was not helping me so something else was required.

Wii to the rescue

Exercising at home is all very well but it is also boring., That is where the Wii has saved me from lack of exercise. Using the game I can ski the high slopes, become an expert rifleman, soccer player, ten pin bowler or anything else I want,

In my own home and away from the noise of others it is equipment that makes me bend my muscles, encourages flexing and stretching in a way that is not tiring and which you are hardly aware of the great exercise benefits.

In fact I can be a kid again riding my scooter or out on the court playing tennis. You can even keep score and play with others for a bit of competition. It's not exactly Wimbledon but the arms are working, the muscles are flexing the body is stretching and getting healthier as the games go on. Oh, it's raining outside and very cold. So what! I am warm, comfortable and it is costing me nothing to be playing my favorite sports.

Time now for a bit of surfing. How about some waveboarding, What! I have never done that before, It's a lot of fun and I am not embarrassing myself in front of anyone, Snow boarding is another great one and then there is skiiing and even snow jumps off high peaks. Wheee!

How about some Judo or karate. Well I love that! But I have to tell you that flying is my thing and soarng around in an aeroplane trying to land on a tiny island is a whole lot of fun, It is hard to come down to earth after that one, But enough play for today and boy are those muscles working now,

      Nice informative lens. Exercise is a part of my life. Every day a go to a gym in my neighborhood for one hour. That's make me feel more energetic.

      We rented a home with a lot of stairs. The kitchen is on the second floor and the bedrooms are on the first floor. (The kitchen overlooks the harbor so I am not complaining) With all the stairs it has been great for my heart and legs. I look for ways to reincorporate exercise into my everyday life

      I'm convicted, and need to exercise more and get into a routine again. I always feel better when I do. Thank you for the very informative lens, and strong encouragement to get moving. :)

      One of the key things I recommend everyone do to get in shape is stretching of some sort. Without it all other exercises can and will lead to injury or soreness which makes people give up and not continue. Yoga is one of the best as it strengthens core muscles and focuses on our breathing as well. Oxygenating our blood cells through deep breathing is a key ingredient of good health that is often overlooked. .
