Heartbreaking Year Could End a Bit Happier With Your Help

Updated on December 2, 2011

Truly heartrending story that could end happier

Tajoun is a 14-year-old boy living in New Jersey. His story is tragic, and his family can use a lot of help right now, quickly. Tajoun's father died last November of cancer. A few months later, his mother died of a heart attack. My mother is alive and every day I wonder what I will do without her one day -- and we haven't lived in the same state for many, many, many years, so you'd think I'd be used to her being "gone", but I still talk to her close to every day. I was close to 40 years old when I lost my father almost 15 years ago, and it was devastating then, and still painful now. I cannot begin to imagine what this boy and his siblings have gone through at such tender ages, and all in less than a year.

They lost both parents in less than a year

and their home, and there's more loss on the way

In addition to losing their parents, Tajoun and his three siblings lost their home since they have to move in with their grandmother and aunt and three cousins. As a result of that move, Tajoun also lost his beloved dog, Delsea, a 2-year-old male pit bull. His neighbor from the old house offered to take Delsea in, so that Tajoun could still visit him. Tajoun has not missed a daily visit with Delsea since then. He walks over every day to play with Delsea and walk him, or just to sit and pour his heart out to his best friend, Delsea. The two were always close, but now Delsea is all Tajoun has left of his former life.

And now he's about to lose Delsea.

Help by spreading the word

Delsea has to leave his home in less than two weeks, and the kids have to start school during that same time. Please help by spreading the word: tweeting, facebooking, linking to the lens, anything you can do to let people know about this situation.

Prejudice against pit bulls causes much heartache

But only for the good guys, as the bad guys continue to fight dogs and mix breeds to create bigger, meaner, wilder versions

The neighbor's landlord has given two weeks notice for Delsea to find a new home. It sounds cruel, but the landlord's insurance charges considerably more for pit bulls, because of the reputation (no matter how undeserved it may be). Tajoun, his 3 siblings, their three cousins, aunt and grandmother are all squeezed into a small 3-bedroom house, and barely managing to feed themselves. The grandmother and aunt are doing all they can to house, feed and clothe the 7 children, and try to get them ready to go back to school.

Delsea is not neutered yet, but the SPCA is setting it up. He is healthy, 2-years-old, and friendly. He seems to like other dogs, cats, and definitely loves kids. He knows some commands, such as give paw, sit, etc. The SPCA says that he greeted them and was gentle, but that he can be protective if he feels his family is threatened -- what dog isn't?

Back to School Supplies Are Badly Needed - Can you help?

According to The Daily Journal, "His aunt teared up as she told us how the family is working so hard to adjust to their new and crowded living situation, and to figure out how to make ends meet, that no one has even had time to mourn the untimely passing of Tajoun's parents. Now they have seven children to prepare for back to school while we work together to find a safe place for Delsea."

You can order back to school supplies and have them sent care of the Cumberland County SPCA, 1244 N. Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ

Delsea needs a home fast

The family needs some other help fast, as well

The Cumberland County SPCA is trying to get some help for this situation, but they can't take in the pit bull, as they aren't able to get them homes in time. No one wants to see Delsea put to sleep. Tajoun is hoping for Delsea to get a home with a big house and big, fenced yard, so the dog can romp and play -- and a nice couch to rest on after all that play. The family needs school supplies and other help.

I dream bigger. I wish for a bigger home for the family, including Delsea. I know there are people out there who can make this into a somewhat happy ending for children who've lost both parents in the same year. I'm just getting started on Squidoo, so donating my earnings here will not likely be helpful, since I haven't had any yet. But maybe we can all help by spreading the word? Maybe someone who knows how can show me how to set up this lens for earnings to be donated to this family. I'm so new I'm not even sure if it's possible to do that, but I know this is a very charitable community, so I'm hoping someone will help me to help this family and their beloved dog.

So much is needed

I'd suggest adding a paypal link if they have one so we could donate directly.

I sure wish I could take that dog. What a heartbreaking story. I'm nominating it for purple star to maybe get some more exposure.

I'll help to get the word out. I'm adding it to my facebook page and tweeting it to my 8000 followers. Hopefully this will help. I'm keeping the family in my prayers.

I liked it here and on Facebook. I don't think I can do more now. This is a fine cause.

Susan, thanks for the tweet, link and fb. I am trying to find out if we could get donations for the insurance the landlord would allow, but so far, the shelter is so busy, it's hard to get information. I think that is the best idea at least for the time being. The neighbor that's keeping the dog seems to like him and his kids seem to like the dog, too, and Tajoun can see him every day. I used to run a large pit bull rescue -- yep, they are fantastic dogs! And we would get calls a lot from people who had insurance problems. Believe it or not, the insurance issues seem a bit better now than several years ago -- that's not saying much. But some people give up very easy. I worry they will give up on this dog and boy too easy, too. That's why I feel so strongly about getting this message out and hopefully getting some help. My finances are worse than bad, so I understand yours completely.

AJ. I have a pit bull and I will tell you that the dog have a bad reputation that is not warranted. A dog that is socialized at a young age only knows to love and they are wonderful dogs. Insurance for the dogs runs very high and in some states it is in the thousands. If it is a question of being able to keep the dog if the insurance is paid maybe donation could be made for that. It would be very hard on the dog to be adopted into a new family, only because they love their people with their entire being....it does not mean the pit bull will not love again. Pit bulls are amazing they have the ability to forget the pain and suffering....I will share by twitter and facebook and I will add to my blog...my funds are really tight because of the cats....I wish I could do more....

Sad situation, indeed. I used to have a pit bull/boxer mix, so I know what sweet, smart, loyal companion dogs they are. High energy, so they need room to run around and someone who can play with them. I hope someone is able to help!
