Hope For Haiti - How To Help

Updated on January 5, 2014

What You Can Do To Help Haiti

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.0 shook the capital city of Haiti, Port-Au-Prince, that caused catastrophic devastation. Already crippled by poverty, Port-Au-Prince is a city of approximately 2 million, where an estimated 80% of the population lives in unimaginable poverty. What the people of Haiti are experiencing after this tragedy must be horrifying and unspeakable.

Haiti, recognized as one of the poorest countries on Earth, is barely recovering from four back to back hurricanes suffered in 2008, Haiti was ill prepared to withstand even the slightest set back. The devastating effects of this earthquake are impossible to imagine.

How can we help those who need our help so desperately? Hope for Haiti who has been helping thousands of families and particularly children in Haiti for nearly twenty years. As of May 2010 Hope for Haiti had raised and sent over 20 million dollars in relief aid to Haitian earthquake victims. Please read on to see how you can help through Hope for Haiti.

Who Is Hope For Haiti?

Post Haitian Earthquake, we see the phrase Hope for Haiti everywhere. Having hope for Haiti is vital to maintain the faith that progress continue toward the restoration of Haiti. But Hope For Haiti is a living, breathing, devoted group of people who have been dedicated towards the improvement of Haiti for a very long time.

Hope For Haiti was founded nearly twenty years ago by JoAnne Kuehner in order in help with educating the children in Haiti. In 1997 she joined forces with Dr.Keith Hussey to expand Hope For Haiti's mission to include health and nutrition.

Hope For Haiti is able to contribute 96% of the money they receive directly to those who need it most, the people of Haiti and those there helping the people long term in hopes through education they can take control of their own future rather than rely on outside sources. Hope For Haiti is able to help over 500,000 people each year . (This number of people helped was before the earthquake)

What Hope For Haiti Does

A Snapshot Of Hope For Haiti's Efforts

Some of the efforts and ensuing results that Hope For Haiti accomplishes are:

Clean Water Initiative - Installing solar powered UV water purification systems that provide 500 gallons of clean, pure water per day.

Education Program - Due to virtually zero government involvement in education, approximately 50% of the people of Haiti do no read or write. Hope For Haiti currently provides an education to over 12,000 children per year.

Mission Trips - Once per month Hope for Haiti conducts mission trips to help with those in need of health care. Health care workers donate their time to volunteer on these mission trips to provide help to those who desperately need it. There is always a need for volunteers, however the earthquake has increased this need tremendously.

Emergency Relief Program In the wake of four back to back hurricanes in 2008, Hope for Haiti helped thousands of families survive the after effects. Through their Emergency Relief Program currently established in Haiti and our donations, families can realize immediate relief from this current catastrophe.

I donate royalties from my lenses to Hope For Haiti. 100% of the Royalties as well as Amazon proceeds from this lens go to Hope For Haiti where 95% of all donations go directly to helping Haiti.

The Relief Efforts

Relief efforts for any catastrophe can never arrive and progress fast enough. The enormity of the efforts and the impossibly slow progress of the rescue and relief efforts in Haiti are resulting in deaths of countless Haitians.....every minute.

Now More Than Ever.....

Help Is Needed In Haiti

The people of Haiti have always lived against the odds, with little attention from the rest of the world, never realizing even some of the basic things we take for granted like shoes, food and an education.

For over twenty years the people of Hope for Haiti have tirelessly worked to improve life for the people of Haiti and have seen amazing results. Even in good times, there is never enough to help everyone. Now, more than ever, our help is needed. Any amount of help is huge.

I know it's tough, so many of us are hurting financially, not working and giving up things we didn't plan on losing. But none of that compares to what an already decimated group of people are experiencing right now.

Now, more than ever, you can make a difference by donating to Hope for Haiti.

It's sad how Haiti hasn't been talked about much since the week of the accident. There are still many people in need. Thanks for this lens.

@anonymous: I just saw you tweet on one of my Twitter Searches on a lens of mine, and thought I'd stop by to say hi. I've found several music downloads on amazon that are for Help for Haiti Now and Hope for Haiti. I've been adding them to some of my lenses (good updates) and even downloaded some music to help. ~ As ever, best wishes with this lens.

You obviously have the real story going on here, well-done! Lady I know is married to a Haitian doc who was there for a few weeks after the quake operating his clinic ... in his 80's! His Haitian family finally FORCED him on a plane back to the US, yet they they are still there and he is here and HATES that, did not wish to leave. At least the clinic he founded is still now in operation by American docs. Bless you! 5*s and prayers.

@sheriangell: Shirl, you are so welcome. I was just wanting to read your news links again, to see if there is anything I'm missing. Its wonderful to know there are so many lives that are being helped. I really can't feel sorry for myself and any of my own grief is so small in comparison to the grief I feel for people in Haiti. ~ I sold a tipi today on my children's tipi site to help Haiti. That feels so good and wanted to share it with you.

      Keep the faith!

Wonderful lens to help in Haiti. Thank you for adding this to the link list, I'll be very proud to get this featured there later today. I just got online for the day and have many things to do first. I see in your mew links above that several movie stars are getting involved and supporting the efforts through Hope for Haiti charity, which has a great reputation.

      God's Speed!

A very good lens on a good charity. I hope they've managed to make it through the quake okay -- but we've got two things to worry about, short-term saving lives and stopping disease, and the more long-term thing of rebuilding, caring for orphans, helping people rebuild their lives. It looks like Hope for Haiti is committed very much to that aspect.
