Help Plant Trees in India and Other Developing Nations

Updated on June 28, 2013

Help Plant Trees Around the World

You can help plant trees in India and other developing nations around the world. Trees for Life (TFL) is a nonprofit organization that plants fruit and fuel trees in impoverished countries, helping poor people become self-sufficient. TFL's first projects were in India, where they still continue to plant many trees, but this movement now has spread to many other countries and now includes projects beyond planting trees. Find out how Trees for Life is helping to combat poverty and empower people.

Why Plant Trees in India, Malawi, Guatemala and Other Countries?

The benefits for people and the environment

Since its founding in 1983, Trees for Life has planted millions of fruit and fuel trees in countries like India, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Brazil, Malawi and many other countries. Why trees? Each tree protects the environment and provides people with a self-renewing source of food. In addition, each person who receives a tree pledges to help at least two others.

Consider these benefits of planting trees:

- A single apple tree can produce nearly 10,000 pounds of fruit during its 40 to 50 year lifespan.

- The leaves from the moringa tree contain 7 times the vitamin C of oranges, 4 times the vitamin A of carrots, 4 times the calcium of milk, 3 times the potassium of bananas and 2 times the protein of yogurt.

- Trees help prevent soil erosion and reduce water runoff.

- An acre of trees absorbs enough CO2 over one year to equal the amount of carbon produced by driving a car 26,000 miles.

But, as the Trees for Life website says, "far more important than the number of trees planted is the fact that tree planting inspires many people to do more to help themselves. They have started projects on bee-keeping, fuel-efficient stoves, improvement of their soils, water conservation, scientific improvement of plant breeding materials, self-help loans, improvement of medical facilities, improvement of educational facilities and other socially responsible activities."
