Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)
Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership
Many people will not know who Hugh O'Brian is, so this is the purpose of the picture to the left. It is my intent to emphasize not the actor, but the actor's discovery of the wonderful organization he found and built in the last 50 years. It is my sincere intent to inform people about this great organization for young people in the hopes some will discover the possibility of HOBY's potential in their lives.
The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program was founded by Hugh O'Brian in 1958. That year, the actor most famous for his role as Hollywood's Wyatt Earp had the unique opportunity to spend nine inspirational days with the great humanitarian, Dr. Albert Schweitzer at Schweitzer's clinic in Africa. There, Dr. Schweitzer impressed upon him that "the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves." This thought inspired Mr. O'Brian to create the first Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, which he founded two weeks after his return to Los Angeles. Throughout the years, the organization has grown and developed. And today, there are over 70 HOBY seminars held each year throughout the United States. Organization Still Going Strong
Gregory G. Stanson, Central Pennsyvlania HOBY volunteer and former member of our Board of Trustees, died Friday, May 18, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. He was 70 years old.
During Greg's stellar career at Lebanon Valley College as Vice-President of Student Services, Greg began his 20-year volunteer service at Central Pennsylvania Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. Greg served our organization as a member of the Board of Trustees and also served as Board President.
During his tenure with Central PA HOBY, Greg created and maintained a scholarship program for any ambassador who went through Central PA, Eastern PA, or Western PA HOBY. Starting with LVC's 4-year scholarship, Greg eventually tallied nearly 30 Pennsylvania colleges and universities that sponsored a scholarship for any PA HOBY alumnus. In addition, Greg coordinated a college fair and financial aid seminar for HOBY parents during the Central PA HOBY annual Leadership Seminar. Greg was an amazing volunteer, mentor, and friend to all of us at Central PA HOBY and we will miss him.
