Updated on March 28, 2015
Source

Earth Day is April 22

Since 1970 Earth Day has been celebrated around the world as a way for us all to do our small part to save energy, our water, our wildlife and forests and reduce pollution in an effort to help the environment that we all live in - little things really do mean a lot! When we all work together, we can create a huge impact and make the world a better place to live.

How to celebrate Earth Day - Every Day will give you some ideas of what you can do on April 22 as well as Earth Day gift ideas and it may inspire you and your family to do these things every day. Every little change that each of us makes to create a healthier planet makes a huge impact to the big picture.

Let's get started with ways to celebrate earth day today. I hope you'll enjoy some of the ways I celebrate Earth Day and also hope you'll find something new to do this year and incorporate it into your every day, green ways using eco friendly products to help our planet.

Shouldn't every day be Earth Day! It can be with these eco friendly ideas and eco friendly gifts.

Vow to Use a Battery Charger for Earth Day - Every Day - Save on batteries, waste and help the environment by recharging batteries!

Batteries thrown into landfills will sit there forever, so recycle yours instead of throwing them away and use rechargeable batteries instead.

Make sure to recycle old used batteries at your local community center and not in the weekly garbage.

Why Celebrate Earth Day

Pollution, deforestation, over population and reducing our personal carbon footprints are the main reasons that we should all take some time to celebrate Earth Day. Global warming is a very real problem caused by greenhouse and CO2 gas emissions and is evidenced by our increasingly warmer winters and other dramatic changes in our weather, disappearing wildlife and habitats and shrinking Arctic seas. These are problems that are caused by humans and the way we live so it is in our best interest to try to make some changes to improve our world and try to leave it better than we found it.

With a great emphasis on 'going green' there are more and more people paying attention to our earth and the environment about finding ways to make a difference. Get on board if you haven't yet or help to teach others how to celebrate earth day.

Earth Day is an opportunity for each of us to have more awareness of what we use, what we waste and make changes that will not only improve our lifestyle but, also allow us to live in harmony with nature not only for us but, for generations to come.

How to Celebrate Earth Day

Ideas you can use on Earth Day and every day!

These are some of the ways I celebrate Earth Day, they're easy and fun to do and hope you'll find some new ways for yourself:

** Walk, bike or use public transportation as much as possible to improve the air quality, save gas and reduce pollution.

** Take a hike to study and learn about the trees, shrubs and flowers around where you live.

** Recycle plastic, aluminum, glass and paper. Most cities offer recycling pickup so this is an easy way to reduce garbage and pollution. If there isn't a local pickup for recycling, there's probably a recycling center in your area that will pay you for those items since they can be reused and made into new products.

** Recycle all old tires, electronics and even prescription drugs when your city or town announces the yearly recycling date for these items.

** Turn off all lights not in use, unplug all computers, chargers, tv's, electronic games, toasters, coffeemakers and any other appliance you're not using to save electric. When they stay plugged in, they still use electric.

** Change at least one lightbulb to an energy saving compact fluorescent bulb - they last for years instead of months!

** Only run your dishwasher when it is a full load - you'll save gallons of water and don't need to pre-wash or rinse them either. Yay!

** Shower instead of bathing - another way to save gallons of water daily!

** Reduce or eliminate if possible all chemicals from your beauty, personal care and household cleaners to improve the air quality for yourself, those you love and the world. Chemicals end up in our drains that eventually lead to our water sources causing illness and disease in humans and pets.

** Pick up after your pets immediately since this is another item that ends up in our drainage system and water eventually - yuck!

** Start a vegetable garden - your own homegrown fruits and vegetables are much healthier for you, you know where they came from, no gas is used to get them to your home and it's so much fun. The kids will love gardening too when you teach them how.

** Plant a tree or a few! Trees help to add oxygen to our air reducing emissions and improving the ozone layer. Plus they're beautiful, offer shade to cool our homes, some offer scent and they attract birds and other wildlife to our yards.

** Plant shrubs and flowering plants to attract more birds and wildlife to your yard.

** Keep your home appliances in good working order to save money on fuel bills and they'll last longer reducing landfill waste.

** Compost grass clippings and leaves is easy, just leave them in your yard and this won't require a compost bin.

** Create a compost bin for food scraps, plants and all biodegradable items.

** Run your washing machine only for full loads to reduce energy consumption and you'll save money too as an added bonus!

** Dry your clothes outside on a clothesline for the fresh breeze and to save electricity.

** Repair leaking water faucets to save water and money!

** Turn off your water faucet when it's not really needed such as for brushing your teeth or hand washing dishes.

** Dress in layers at home during cool weather or use a blanket to keep your furnace low or off to save electricity and your heating bills.

** Reuse what you can for new purposes instead of throwing it away such as furniture, fabrics. Get creative and use that old tub as a garden!

** Donate what you no longer want or need - there is always a charity or someone in need and you get not only a great feeling by helping someone else but, a tax deduction for your donations and less garbage in our landfills.

** Take time to enjoy the beauty of the many sights and sounds of nature all around and decide if there's something you can do it make it even better!

** Start planning your summer holidays now using eco-friendly products.

More ways to Celebrate Earth Day

April 22 is Earth Day!

Find some unique ways to Celebrate Earth Day and add your own in the comments section!

** Clean out your refrigerator and freezer. The inside works harder to cool your food when it's full and it's silly and wasteful to keep cooling food that is outdated or has freezer burn.

** Clean the vents at the bottom and back of your freezers or refrigerators to keep them running most efficiently.

** Join the Arbor Day Foundation for $10, get 10 free trees to plant in your container garden, to save 2500 square feet of rain forest, send Give A Tree cards that help plant a tree with each card sent. (www.arborday.org).

** Volunteer in your community for a planned clean up day at a park, the beach, along roadways or in neighborhoods.

** Shop for more bamboo products. They're fast growing and regrow after being cut, bamboo is resistant to termites and moisture, saves the forests and cleans the air absorbing the CO2 and adding our much needed oxygen.

** Use ecofriendly products that won't harm the planet.

** Check out the articles at the end of this article on creative projects to do to Celebrate Earth Day.

** Clean up your own yard or neighborhood of trash and debris - you may even get your neighbors inspired to do the same!
