Libertopia: The Movie, The Festival, The Movement

Updated on October 23, 2014

Next stop ... Libertopia

I just love the word - libertopia. It's just full of promise. I first heard it in relation to the documentary about the Free State Project, but it turns out there's also a festival by that name.

So we're looking at them together here as they're both about the effort to achieve what frequently seems unachievable - a true state of liberty. The movie does it by bringing a little more light to one of the ways libertarians are putting feet to words. The festival does it by bringing together thinkers from across the country for an annual celebration of peace, freedom, music, community and ideas.

So let's head out to Libertopia!

Libertopia: The Movie

Libertopia Film - Documentary on The Free State Project

Libertopia is a documentary that examines the people of the Free State Project - ordinary citizens attempting to reclaim a voice against a government which they believe shares neither their priorities nor their interests. Primarily libertarian leaning, and often considered radicals in their home towns, these people have begun a modern-day pilgrimage to New Hampshire.

The goal is to find 20,000 people to move to New Hampshire and the film takes a closer look at the movement through the eyes of three people involved in the project.

Libertopia Festival 2014

The festival Libertopia is also about creating a free society, only outside the confines of government. The organization works with a rejection of politics, while the Free State Project featured in the film is all about changing things through politics.

At the heart of the festival are the ideas of Murray Rothbard taken to a logical conclusion - the non-aggression axiom and the concept that "it's my life and no one can own me." The group is made up of full-blown voluntaryists, agorists, and anarchists in the sense of "no rulers."

While there are a ton of speakers at the festival, the presentations are kept short to allow more time for questions and answers and breakout groups to explore issues in greater depth, as well as more panels and more workshops.

The long-range mission of the festival/conference is to establish Libertopia. Which they define as "a voluntary community based on freedom & peace; where each individual's sovereignty and dignity are respected and all forms of aggression, coercion and violence are unacceptable. Until then, we will hold an annual Libertopia festival: a three day (and eventually a week long) celebration where we share ideas, explore, experiment, discover, innovate, trade, gift, create or perform art, spread the love and rejoice in our diversity and unique individuality."

Five Principles of Libertopia

  1. All actions should be peaceful and voluntary.

The axiomatic and first principle of Libertopia is that all forms of coercion and violence are unacceptable.

  2. Honor the self.

Each one of us is unique in the universe, endowed with free will, reason and dignity. Celebrate and radically express your unique individuality.

  3. Rule yourself

As free and sovereign individuals, we rule ourselves and are totally responsible for all our actions.

  4. Live and let live

Radical tolerance and acceptance of different lifestyles and life choices. Embrace our diversity and uniqueness.

  5. Community of Spontaneous Order

Allow order to arise by pursuing happiness, respecting each others sovereignty, and engaging in peaceful and voluntary interactions -- exploring, experimenting, discovering, creating, innovating, sharing, selling, trading, gifting, prospering and loving one another.
