Things that Make my Heart Melt

Updated on July 15, 2012

10 Things to Make your Heart Melt with Love!

What makes your heart melt? Cute animals, romantic love notes, or stories that warm your soul? Here I've compiled a list of the things that make my heart melt.

Having put it together, I think everyone should make one - it's a little slice of heart melting joy that can boost your spirits when they are low.

From the mouths of babes to love poems, animal magic to acts of human kindness, here are the things that make my heart melt. Do they make yours melt too?

1. Things my little girl says...

As any mom or dad knows, when you have a child, there are countless moments in life that make your hearts melt. But the moments that make mine melt the most are in those moments of young innocence, when words are spoken that mean so much.

My daughter is two and a half at time of writing, and this morning was a prime example of the beauty of her words. Upon waking, one of the first things she said, completely out of the blue, was, "Does your hand still hurt, Mummy?"

Not only was I touched that she remembered I had a poorly hand after a few weeks of suffering with it, but that heart melt moment was truly cemented when she then asked if she could kiss it better.

I could fill this entire page with her musings, but here are some more of my favourites:

Me: "I can't get this yet, sweetheart, Mummy doesn't have enough money."

(Freya scurries off to retrieve her purse and taking out her saved 2p and 5p coins)

Freya: "Here you go, Mummy, pennies!

Now you can buy it at the shops!"

"Look, Mummy, a dog/cat/bird/bee/spider/beetle

- he's lovely, can we stroke him?"

"Will we see any dinosaurs in the park, Mummy? I love dinosaurs!"

Me: "Ow, my hand!"

Freya: "Do you need Peso's bandage?"

(Peso is the medic penguin in the cartoon "Octonauts" who treats poorly sea creatures with his bandages. Freya has his play set with said bandage and yes, she did later proceed to wrap my hand in it!)

(Looking at my cake)

"That's beautiful, Mummy!"

"Look at all the pretty little ants, Mummy!"

This article on the science behind the mother-child bond and their cellular connection made my heart melt, too (and brought a tear to my eye!)

2. Animals who show us how to love...

and who make us laugh!

Animals have such a beautiful capacity for love, in its purest and wildest form. Whether it is an image such as this, of two unlikely creatures curled up in an embrace, or your own dog sitting with his head in your lap, with those adoring eyes, keeping you company because he knows somehow that you're feeling down, animals make our hearts melt on a regular basis. They truly are gifts from above, and children know this instinctively, too. This picture of a girl transfixed by dolphins is just magic.

Of course, animals can make our hearts melt in other ways too, with cuteness or hilarity, or just their sheer awesomeness. What bad day can fail to be brightened by the expression on this cat's face as he is embraced by a monkey?

3. Friends who are there for you...

and the places you find them...

True friends are ones you will share beautiful moments with - both meaningful and frivolous. I have been blessed with incredible people in my life. What makes my heart melt about them? Let me count the ways!

One memory that sticks in my mind was being ill with a sinus infection earlier in the year, and having a friend, on the other side of the world, take the time to make this up for me (see photo on the right) and post a photo of it on Facebook, telling me she was thinking of me and sending healing. That pretty much sums up the beautiful and meaningful ways in which people in our lives can make our hearts melt - out of the blue, in small ways and large ways, through thick and thin.

Friends who surprise you. Friends who open up and share a heartfelt sentiment with you. Friends who make you smile. Friends you can help and love in return. And most importantly, friends we love, and who love us back, no matter what.

4. Random acts of love and kindness...

An unexpected love note that makes you smile. A small gift given when times are hard. A moment shared. A person to talk to who truly listens. A problem shared. A heart opened. A sacrifice made.

One little act of love or kindness that can make all the difference in the world to someone, or even turn their life around.

Moments like these make my heart melt, whether they are for me, or for another. Experience is what shapes us, and the more special experiences we have, filled with kindness and love, the better.

They don't have to be human kindnesses, either. In this act of love, a loyal dog risked its own life in a busy road to stay by its injured companion.

Love is...

Random Acts of Heroic Love
Random Acts of Heroic Love

This incredibly beautiful book was a bestseller in the UK and understandably so. It tells two stories, both heartbreaking in their own way. One is the story of a man who wakes up to find that his beloved soul mate has been killed in a bus crash, and how he faces life without her. The other tells the story of a world war soldier who faces an impossibly journey through the wilderness to return home to the woman he loves...

5. Reminders that the world IS a good place...

Every time I see a blog post or news article about a wonderful human being who has selflessly acted on behalf of someone or something they believe in, or simply done something to help another human being, my heart melts in the BEST possible way.

Not only does it make your heart smile with joy, it makes you forget the bad stuff and remember that the world IS, on the whole, filled with amazing people.

My heart melts when people do selfless things like this, or generous things like this, or brave things like this!

To fully experience this particular form of heart melt for yourselves, I recommend visiting 21 Pictures to Restore your Faith in Humanity. I challenge you not to be moved by at least one of them!

6. Stories from the horse sanctuary...

Sadly, the world can be a cruel place, too. And many of those cruel acts, unbelievably, happen to animals. I've been a lover and supporter of Redwings Horse Sanctuary since I was a teenager and enjoy reading the updates from my adopted horse, Finnegan, and pony, Harry Potter, on a yearly basis.

I receive the sanctuary's newsletter, and for all the sad stories that they have to share, there are many heartwarming ones also. The summary of Finnegan's story is a prime example - a coloured cob rescued from the streets of London in poor condition, now loving his days at Redwings as a happy horse who "loves a cuddle!"

Or then there's Bungle, who not only survived his own terrible ordeal (heart tears), but now watches over his "surrogate nephew", who went through a similar experience (heart melt!).

7. Squid love...

Let's get back to people for a moment. I've been on Squidoo since 2009 and one of the things about this community that stands out over and over again is just how wonderful that community is.

Aside from the incredible support given and the friendships forged, it is in times of need that the Squid community truly pulls together. From organizing a card or present for a sick Squid in hospital, to starting a fund to help a Squid in need, these are the moments that make my heart melt here on Squidoo.

None more so than this wonderful story from Susan52. Not only did she receive overwhelming love and support from her fellow Squids when her house burned down, but she also had a wonderful surprise from some amazing Squids. Read Susan's story in her own words, and your heart might just melt too. I know mine did!

8. Mother Nature in all her glory...

My heart is happiest when out in nature. When you talk about what makes a heart melt, most people will immediately think of puppies and kittens, or romantic notions. And sure, those things make my heart melt, too! But I'm a true nature girl. and it is in the trees, skies, oceans and hills that I find many of my most profound heart melt moments.

The sun rising and setting. The trees as they turn from summer leaves to cascading autumn magnificence. The weave and dive of a little fish as my foot invades his rock pool. The birds in the garden at nesting season, or the blackbird all fluffed up and happy in the bird bath. The magnificence of a wild tiger, wolf or horse... or the beautiful fragility of a bird in flight, a tiny mouse out hunting for food, or a butterfly dancing in the breeze.

When I need to have my moment, these are the places I turn to, and they don't just make my heart melt, they sing my heart song, and they heal it, too.

9. Beautiful words... - Music, Poems and Quotes...

I am a collector of quotes, and yes, one of those potentially annoying people who post meaningful and insightful quotes on my Facebook and Twitter pages. I love them. I can't get enough of them. There are so many beautiful ones, I could fill an entire scrapbook with them! When you find a good one, and it melts into your heart with its beauty or insight, it inspires you to create your own heart-melting beauty, too.

Similarly, I have lost count of the number of times I have gotten lost in a beautiful song, swept up in the lyrics and a gift of a voice that melts the heart and renders it forever touched by the beauty.

Poems can have the same effect. I love Yeats, Poe and many other wonderful poets, but for true heart melting ecstasy, you need look no further, in my humble opinion, than the heaven-inspired words of Rumi.

"I have been a seeker and I still am, but I've stopped asking the books and the stars.

I started listening to the teaching of my Soul."

- Rumi

10. Stories...

Ah, now this is where I come home. Stories have been part of my life since I was a child. I read them, I listened to them, I wrote them, I told them. I still do all of these things to this day.

Stories are in our blood and our veins. They are part of our hearts and souls. They stir emotions within, they speak to the archetypes buried inside us that hark back to ancient times.

We lose ourselves in them, we become one with them. We become part of the story. They need not even be in words. So many times I have lost myself in a beautiful photograph or piece of art, and found myself discovering an entire story.

The ones that touch us, the ones that melt our hearts, are the ones we treasure and keep with us forever. What is your story? Go on, share it. Make a lens on it. Inspire others with it.

It might just melt someone's heart...

Your lens made my heart melt for sure. Once my daughter refused to extract her tooth. It had to be removed as a new tooth was already pushing its way out. For some reasons, she was scared and refused to get it removed even though the same dentist had extracted her other teeth. I didn't want to force her and returned home. That night, she wrote a looooong letter to tooth fairy mentioning by she was scared and apologized. She had slipped another letter for me apologizing for the embarrassment I had to go through. Next day, she tried almost everything and took out the tooth herself. So little things in life at times melts us. :)

When my son was 5 years old I took him for a long walk on a beautiful forest trail. He looked up at me about halfway through and said "Mommy....This makes my heart nice". I melted right then and there :) I will never forget it

It is no doubt to say that you described the human nature. All of the normal humans almost have the same sense in these occasion that you mentioned earlier. One more thing That I like the most is '"Whenever i help some one needy that did not know to me". It is also far more pleasure.
