How to Give to the Red Cross

Updated on March 12, 2011

How to Support the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross provides emergency aid, food, and shelter to disaster victims. They are also the largest supplier of blood in the United States. The Red Cross is a charitable organization, not a government organization, and it depends on the time, money, and blood of generous volunteers. There are a number of ways that you can give to the Red Cross, including blood, which is the gift of life.

Dear WeddingZazzle, I will be featuring this on my Safe Water a Human Right lens which was also inspired by you and your other lens devoted to conserving water. The Red Cross and Save the Children are two of my favorite charities.Just want to share this story with you that my father told me (about 20 years ago). My father had many award pins given to him for donating blood, I saw them among his cuff links. He was blood type AB- (which is a rare). While attending University in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, my father was called on the phone (by the Canadian Red Cross) to give blood since a young man sharing the same rare blood type had been in a horrible accident and his status was looking dire. They told my father that they contacted all 7 other AB- blood typed people (who donate blood) living within a 100 mile radius of the city. And you know what? My father said he never forgot this, when he arrived at the hospital to donate his blood, ALL 7 people were there too to donate their precious AB- blood, some having traveled over 50 miles to show up.

Great lens and very informative. Red Cross is helping everywhere in the world. Very important for people to become blood donors; there is always a need for blood.
