The Big Five Are More Than Five

Updated on September 9, 2014

What are the big five? They are not five -- and I'll tell you what the big five are!

Find out here what the Big Five are -- in every way, from the new theory of personality traits to the African animals and important commercial/social or cultural brand names -- and the link between all of them.

The Big Five -- is used with multiple meanings. It can have reference in three large categories: sports and entertainment, business and government and science and technology.

The element that links them is power and strength that the number Five associated with the word Big suggests. The meaning of the symbolism originates from the initial Big Five -- the most powerful animals living in the Southern Africa; the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo and the rhino. They are the most difficult animals to hunt -- and people did hunt in South Africa for survival before the fashion of trofee hunting appeared -- so the subsequent meaning of power, importance and leading value of those big five animals together used to have a real sense. It became a symbol that would be attached to a concept, brand or cause where five major elements can be defined. The term Big Five would suggest a primary position in a certain field by the combined power effect of five major contributory factors. This perception is the image created by the successful hunter of the Big Five in Africa that proved himself stronger than them. In the African belief the hunter would take the hunted animal's power onto himself. -- and so do the Big Five brands worldwide extending their power on everybody involved. That is the suggestion -- that is the meaning behind the symbol.

The powerful animals of the African lands -- dangerous, proud, beautiful, ever fighting for survival. It is not a world for the weak.

Why are the Big Five personality traits so important?

The Big Five personality traits are important for achieving the balance between the individual (a smaller unit) and the environment (the system) The environment is changing and so must we -- as a result of a permanent process of balancing between the two. We can not balance unless we are permeable to change and can manage to negotiate on a constant basis with the new.To be permeable we have to be open, we have to be able to communicate -- and to have the ability to negotiate we have to consider others in what they say or do. We have to be able to have our own judgement based on the ability to co-relate all the elements from our environment.

So, here we are, you see -- it's simple, no?

The Big Five personality traits come into this process with a defining force. Huge force, life shaping effects.

That is why they got named after the original Big Five. That is why they are important.

It is a complex subject matter -- it's study involves several fields of science and the elements are difficult to monitor or the effects to measure. Nevertheless it is a fascinating topic. to think about. Understanding how the Big Five traits work is one first step to use them to our best advantage -- whichever field we are active in. For a person in a leadership position --- or if one wants to be in one -- the personality type of people is an important issue and the Big Five test an efficient tool..

So many Big Five linked by the same concept -- no wonder that people asks themselves: What are the Big Five?

Personality traits have been researched in the past -- but with the modern communication tools and supported by social development, researchers share their information -- as a result powerful compact concepts and theories emerge about human personality.

To understand the reasons how and why an individual relates to society in one manner or another becomes more and more important as rapid changes in social environment force people to live together in very close proximity. The challenge is to preserve the natural diversity of human characters and balance that with the necessary social skills to cohabit and communicate according to certain rules that can be accepted by a great majority and respected by the rest. In this regard, the study and research on the interdependence of personality and human behavior became of utmost importance. From a business point of view is most important to understand human interaction -- as the team working together for a common goal is a basic requirement for success. How to choose a team?
