A Nightmare or a Night of Salvation of a Nation?

The popular movie, The Purge, and its various other sequels (The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and The First Purge) introduce a solution to a problem the US government is facing right now - a way to cut down on government debt by allowing citizens to commit all illegal acts for one night out of the year - including murder. The overall goals of this night differ from what the government gets and what citizens get. Lets take a quick look at the pro's and con's each group receives from this night.

The Gains are Real for *almost* Everyone

Between people stealing and looting, governments lowering citizen count and killing those of poor wealth, and foreign countries sponsoring the travel of their citizens to the US to take part as a "murder tourist" everyone can make this a win somehow or another. The only problem is this fight is very unbalanced as personal wealth can determine if you survive the night or not. Most if not all poorer people will have to hide as well as possible and take flight to the woods and fields for any chance of surviving even middle income Purgers.

Looting will be one of the major goals of gangs and individuals looking to Profit from The Purge. Wealth Distribution will be most peoples goals on this unholy night.

The Purge: Anarchy
The Purge: Anarchy

Here is the second Purge in the series. It follows a couple who never wanted to be part of the event around for the night with twists and turns that are unexpected to say the least.

Whats stopping The Real Life Purge?

You may think you are angry, you might want to be able to steal and commit illegal acts for one night out of the year to "Cleanse" your soul. While as a theory and a short term idea, it sounds ok, once your actually tasked to doing it you will not take part. The psychology of The Purge exists in everyday life now. People get killed, they rob banks, they steal other things, they hurt each other daily. Trying to convince some people to only do this one day a year is a useless effort. It's also to note that humanity is the number one reason why we wouldn't be able to "Purge" - along with religion coming close second for some.

The Purge: Election Year
The Purge: Election Year

In this Purge we see why someone has to rise up and try to dethrone The New Founding Fathers by legally winning an election against them. Only this year, The Purge isn't protecting any officials - everyone is fair game. We also get the first commercial look at "Murder tourism".

We are Wired in our Brains to not be able to have a sustainable Purge

The end all to this question doesn't lie in what we feel or if we are willing or not to Purge. The answer lies in our ability to adapt, make tools, be social-able, and our universal fear of death. The fear of death is what holds all humans together, the fact we don't want to die even if we are willing we will try all of our mental prowess to survive. Its in our DNA, even if some defy this and take their own lives or that of others. I believe the first Purge would work, people will kill and loot but the issue isn't the crime or death or wealth distribution - its that the survivors learned how to survive and will adapt for next years Purge. This is the problem, just like gangs in real life and other organizations, the humans who want to be superior to others will band together and make a more and more powerful entity year after year. At one point, the intelligence and resources of a group will become so large they can over throw the government and reform. This is how all wars and territory taking has happened in all of History. Pick any country that has had tribes or groups of people, take Japan for instance. Japan had lands with warlords controlling areas. You wouldn't be able to move safely and freely from one land to the next. Look at the US before we took it from the Indians, you will see many tribes who held their own ground and warred - a lot. This is why The Purge can never last, it will be overthrown and the people who stop the biggest will be crushed until only the biggest is left. Thats what the US was when it was created. We banded together to kill the Indians, fight off the English King, and claim our own country as ours. How long will the US government be able to hold up against the populous if The Purge was actually created? The overwhelming amount of people who want to do the right thing will rise and take down the event and take control of the nation. Thats what happens when people are pushed to the edge, when they see their friends and loved ones murdered and robbed. Humanity will always prevail, even over itself.

What about those who are insane and will murder during The Purge?

For those who enter the realm of mentally unstable and hostile there is only one situation that can occur. During the first Purge people who survive will learn to protect themselves better against these kind of people. Yes, these people will be able to kill many and be successful in their mind but they will get reckless and slip and a normal minded person will win at some-point (if not, this person will become a faction leader with followers as he is unstoppable.) Because of how humans use guns and traps and tools, people like this will not be able to take advantage of groups of people trying to survive, its a lot easier for humans to defend then it is for them to attack.

The First Purge
The First Purge

This is the First Purge. This is how the the entire thing started. Starting as a highly funded experiment on Staten Island in New York, it quickly became a great success after hired mercenaries entered the events of the night.
