Why are we bombing Libya?

Updated on November 24, 2014

What is the USA up to?

"Operation Odyssey Dawn" began on March 19, 2011. It is the code name for the U.S. military involvement in Libya. Libya is basically having a civil war. Many of the people in Libya don't want to be ruled by Gaddafi anylonger. So they started protesting, but it has not turned out into an easy revolution.

Gaddafi has threatened to "cleanse" the people. He seems willing to kill many people to stay in charge. The United Nations voted to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. Shortly after the vote, U.S. President Obama said that the U.S. military would participate in military action with the goal being "the protection of civilians in Libya." Hours later, the U.S. military attacked Libya with Tomahawk cruise missiles and air strikes.

What do you think?

Why are we attacking Libya?

Obama says the U.S. will not send soldiers into Libya... - But sometimes things change.

Do you think the U.S. will send ground forces into Libya?

Some Military Personnel Already on the Ground in Libya

3/27/11 Update

I heard Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer speak on Fox news today. He says that there are actually some military personnel already on the ground in Libya, although they are probably not in uniform. Their job is to determine the missiles' targets. The missiles are laser guided, and a specific target location has to be given. Satellite imagery alone doesn't give the complete intelligence information.

Watch the Fox News Video "Is the President Lying About Libya?" about whether there are American soldiers in Libya.

And here's another video about whether U.S. troops are already on the ground in Libya.

Thanks for bringing up this important topic. I came here when it was a little bit old news - but I am responding because it is so important. There have been documents that described plans to have wars in Middle East countries far beyond the times that they happened. Chilling actually. It we are directly hit that might be one thing - but the truth of the matter is that we have been on an imperialist plan for a long time that will bring ruin to our nation. Millions of dollars for Libyan roads? What about our own? There are people who talk about our children being just "cannon fodder" - it is important that we do not allow this to be the reality of our foreign policy.

Oops, I didn't realise my little rant (above) was so long.

One of the reasons I think this whole push for democracy has kicked off in Arabic nations is because of the internet. Ordinary people the World over want the same things, peace and a better future for their children with more opportunities for those children than we had ourselves when we were young. When they look at the internet and see the freedoms which true democracy affords those not living under totalitarian regimes, they naturally want to have those freedoms instead of what is a police state imposed on them.

I think particularly when they see that it is perfectly possible for all faiths and colours to live together in harmony, they reject the propaganda messages fed to them by their rulers.

If all people are free, in the most democratic ways, then the entire World will no longer hold a place for terrorists who exploit the differences between West and East to their own ends. People who have been kept in a lifestyle which can often only be described as medieval in many cases, are all too ready to believe that it is not the fault of their own ruler but instead the fault of the Western world. Enable the people to have the same freedoms we all enjoy and the terrorist loses his lever.

Wiith a no-fly zone in place, it is now for the Libyan people to seek those freedoms and human rights we take for granted, and to grab democracy with their own hands.
