they 're called manholes because you have to "man up" to crawl down that hole

Unlike Paris, tourists don't visit American sewers.

Your sewer on drugs

One teaspoon of sewage is enough to drug test an entire city.

A 2006 government survey estimated that 20.4 million Americans use illegal drugs but sewer test indicate that figure may radically underestimate the problem.

[source: Popular Science magazine]

Why this is a bad idea

drugs

sometimes prescription, over-the-counter and illegal drugs are excreted in urine

sometimes illegal drugs are flushed down the toilet when cops are kicking in the door

sometimes we get sick of legal drugs and flush a bottle of pills down the toilet along with the vomit

sometimes Big Brother checks the wastewater coming out of your home before it enters the sewer (yes, they can do that)

most water purification facilities can't remove drugs

the real price of other people's addiction: it forces non-drug users to participate (Mormons and other abstainers beware! Bottled water is just as vulnerable.)

if it's on the ground, then into the groundwater or the nearest stream

then into the river and into the ocean and into you.

not all secret dumping is done at midnight in the nearest creek

Sometimes it is done underwater. The news media will just figure that it is an oil spill or a ship pumping bilge.

toiletries down the drain

Chemical residue from thousands of tons of personal-care products (such as shampoo, lotion, and cosmetics) go down the drain every year.

solid waste

everything from heavy metals and medical waste to condoms, tampons, diapers, and even dead animals (dogs, fish, etc.)

Common Courage’s number one seller blows the lid off of today's multi-billion-dollar propaganda-for-hire PR industry, revealing how public relations wizards concoct and spin the news, organize phony "grassroots" front groups, spy on citizens and conspire with lobbyists and politicians.
