Wound upon wound

Updated on September 5, 2011

Background information to this poem

The poem Wound upon wound is a reflection on the colonization of Africa, Zimbabwe in particular. Cecil John Rhodes led a colonial party in the colonization of Africa. On reaching Zimbabwe, he named the first port of entry Fort Victoria (Now Masvingo). Zimbabwe itself was named Rhodesia ,after him. His dream was to colonize Africa from the Cape (South Africa) to Cairo (Egypt). Having lived in a colonial state, these are my sentiments:

Wound upon wound

He had dreams, dreams and schemes

To rape every nation from Cape to Cairo

Line them up and rule them in a row

Brutally brainwashing the mortals of the land

Now in Matopos lies he dead

Who scared with the very touch of his fatal hand

Leaving scar upon scar

Wound upon wound

Sore upon sore

There upon a thriving land came he

Proclaiming century old traditions pagan

All in a rage to realize his dream

To conquer the land from Cape to Cairo

What a Whore! Ever reaching out for more

and more

Leaving scar upon scar

Wound upon wound

Sore upon sore

Slowly we trace the path he trod

Leading across lands unkown to the sea

On a gloomy English morning

Come we’pon Big Ben

And this is from whence came the dreaded hand

That wished to sleep with evry nation in a row

Dreaming of a conquer from Cape to Cairo

Oh what a whore!

Leaving scar upon scar

Wound upon wound

Sore upon sore

Interesting that you boil the entire British Empire down to Cecil John Rhodes. It was not just Africa, the British were everywhere. Nice poetry.
