Does the spirit sleep when we sleep?

   Does the spirit sleep when we sleep?
   
   Is our spirit our consciousness? And does the spirit also sleep when we sleep? If it doesn't, then why can't I know it?

   I believe spirit does not sleep when we sleep. In fact, they could be lurking around us when we are resting. Just my thoughts.

   I do not think our spirit needs sleep, maybe refreshing by God, but not sleep as we see it
   
   Sleep seems to be the 'downtime' we need to 'defrag' our brains and consciousness, a time when the body is hopefully refreshed and the mind cleaned out.
   
   From encounters I used to have early on, when 'enemy spirit forms' would appear in my room, it seems that my spirit or the Holy Spirit was there to awaken me, and over time, I learned that the words " Be gone in the name of Jesus Christ" would cause those alien spirits to dispel immediately, and in time, stop their incursions.
   
   So I agree with nicregi that our spirits hover whilst we sleep, guarding us from harm, whilst we are resting and restoring.

   I believe that the spirit is who we are, and the body is just a tool. But when we sleep our spirit might be just as a wake in our dreams.

   This is an interesting question. I believe that the spirit most certainly does not sleep when the body sleeps. I believe that man is a three part entity, body, spirit and soul. I believe that every body has a spirit which animates it, emotions and such, and I believe that the soul is something that is indicative to humans. Something only we have which explains our sentient consciousness. We are aware of ourselves because "ourselves" is not only the body of which we inhabit.
   
   My reason for believing that it does not sleep when we do is that when we are dreaming we have a tendency to talk in our sleep, laugh in our sleep, scream and cry in our sleep. All these things that are telling us of an emotion that we are feeling at the moment....yet our bodies are asleep. So no I do not believe the spirit sleeps when our bodies do. I believe sleep is a necessity of the flesh, a de-stressor to a sensory overload or a recharge to a taxed body.

   No spirit can not sleep even we are sleeping. If our spirit will sleep then how we can see dreams?? So in my opinion Spirits never sleep.

   I do not believe that it does.  I've been sleeping before and my body woke up and I found that I was talking to God...it's like I woke up and caught myself in the middle of a conversation...it was so funny!  I said, "so God, are you telling me that..." and I stopped as soon as my consciousness became aware that I was talking.  I should have written it down--it was awesome revelation--but I forgot it pretty quickly.  I think important things happen below the surface and even if we are not aware, it still impacts us.  David also mentions in the Bible something about his heart being instructed in the night while he sleeps.

   Our spirit (true self) can be our consciousness. That is the ideal.
   
   But for most of us, the spirit is already asleep and has been that way for a very long time. The spirit sleeps before we were born and continues to sleep past our death, unless through Christ we wake it up and allow it to assume the viewpoint of the "self." Even many Christians remain asleep to the spirit. I dare say most of them remain asleep, spiritually. That troubles me.
   
   What most of us think of as consciousness is ego. This is the sense of entitlement to be right. This is the "self" which is vulnerable. This is the self which is bruised when someone else points out our mistakes.
   
   The true self (child of God, within) is invulnerable. Assuming this viewpoint makes turning the other cheek natural, because the spiritual self can never be hurt. Turning the other cheek is another way of saying, "wake up!" Assume the viewpoint where you don't need to react to a slap, or to anything else that would otherwise cause ego to hold resentment.
   
   This is the viewpoint where forgiveness is complete erasure of the ball-and-chain which would bind others to resentment. Forgiveness is forgetting and letting go cleanly and completely. Only spirit can do that.

    No.Our spirits don't need for sleep.It is the physical body that need the rest. Our spirits are supernatural and is not common like the flesh.

    Hi, this is a funny question because I never thought that way. I always initiate my pray every night before going to bed, asking my guardian angels and guides to take the opportunity my spirit is free, to guide me with important messages and take me thru the night journey safely.
    The spiritists are believers that while the conscious brain sleeps, it gives the chance to the spirit to be free and reinvigorate with lessons from our guides.

    No our Spirit does not sleep when we sleep. I will keep this subject in mind and pray about it. There may be a hub about this some time. The Bible is full of information on this subject. You just have to look for it.
    Many times the prophetic books describe being "taken up" out of the body. Even in the NT there are accounts of knowledge given by the Spirit.

    We are spirits given a temporary body because of sin. Not just our consciousness, but what we are. It's kinda absurd if you really think about it, to wonder if something that is immortal like our spirit, sleeps, why would it need to. God made us immortal. There is no spirit sleep, our soul is our consciousness/emotional being by the way, not the spirit, these are 2 different things. The reason we don't necessarily feel our spirits is because we feel our present mortal bodies that are aging and dying more everyday.
