Save On Weddings

Updated on December 18, 2015

Planning A Weddding

Planning a wedding can be very simple or very complicated depending on what style you are looking at having as well as very expensive. The average cost of a wedding is $26,444 which is quite scary personally as it is for one day only and often causes a lot of stress.

However, many people are delaying their wedding for years as they believe it has to cost thousands of dollars which they do not have which is sad.

We were married a few years ago (2nd time for both of us ) and we decided to have a beach wedding which cost us between $500-600. The service was the most expensive out of everything.

My dress was $50 new in a local shop sale.

Flowers approx $10 on the day fresh in the supermarket & colour I wanted!

Wine for after the ceremony $20

Lunch for us & guests $150- If we had more guests it would have gone up accordingly

Photography & my ride to the beach $50

Service was approx $350 if I remember correctly and that was our biggest cost.

I have read that some will do it for a lot less so remember to price around for everything.

Tips on saving while planning a wedding

First of all, you need to work out together what your budget is that you need to stick to for the day.

What is most important to you personally? For some brides, it is having the right dress to wear while others are more concerned that they have the guests they love attending.

Do you have a venue close by that you can use the beach, a lake or local park? What about a house that has a nice garden?

What talents do your family & friend have that they could share on the day instead of a present

Are any of them keen on photography or cake making -have a lovely garden full of flowers.

Choosing flowers that are available + in the season will give you a good saving.

Does anyone sew exceptionally well to make a wedding or bridesmaids dresses

Hiring men's suits can sometimes be cheaper than buying them.

Also not having too many bridesmaids that you need to buy dresses /shoes for will be a big saving.

Guest List

If having all your friends and family at the wedding is most important as is usually the case for your first wedding & that is what makes the day ,why not consider a bring a plate wedding where everyone brings food or drink to share . We have been to a few weddings like this and everyone has a great time as well as a lovely feed.

If you feel this isn't your style others have put on a barbecue or a spit with salads .

You can start buying your drink on special weeks before the big day to make a great saving.

The Wedding Cake

As soon as you mention the word wedding cake the price goes sky high just like with flowers .

Why not advertise locally to see if there are any cake makers at home that would be happy to make it for a smaller amount & free advertising . I used to know a lady in our town who made amazing cakes at a great price and they were delicious.

Square cakes go further in serving guests also order the size you need to feed everyone rather than ordering a massive overpriced one that is not needed yet is still delicious .

If you have the time and are creative you might choose to try making your own wedding cake ! it could be the start of a new fun career in cake making !

Time of day for wedding

It seems to be traditional that weddings take place usually on a Saturday either about 2 PM or later however you can save a lot of money by changing the time of your wedding to another day as it will save you a lot of money.

We personally got married on a weekday morning around 11.30 then had a lunch. As it was our 2nd time we didn't have many guests so it worked out well.

If you do have a lot of guests then you will most likely find a Friday night or Sunday will suit you better as it can be hard for some to get off work.

Save on Invitations

Many people are saving on designer wedding invitations and creating their own personal invitations which are so much more meaningful.

2nd Wedding

If you are getting married for a 2nd time then there will be many items that you will have already so rather than receive gifts why not suggest guests can pay for their meal or donate to the honeymoon fund.

As there often is not as many guests it makes it easier to find a venue for free or at low cost for the short time needed.

Shop Around

Do check local op shops for dresses if you are low on funds.

Be brave and ask neighbors for help if they have an amazing flower garden or you know they are amazing cake makers.

Look in local papers or Gumtree/Craigslist list for services you might need or place your own advert.

Most of all no matter what you do - Enjoy the day and keep your sense of humour !

Wedding Songs

If you have the right venue for music then it is nice to pick out a wedding song that you both enjoy and will give you many future happy memories to enjoy !

Love your ideas. -Went to a 9am Monday morning beach wedding in Texas in July. We had brunch. Amazing. -My son got married in August in his father-in-laws backyard. The after the family BBQ was at their favorite tavern. It was the groom and his father who added an extra thousand to the deal. Buy one get one free is never a inexpensive endevor.

Friends of ours were married on the beach this past summer. It was such a lovely spot. A rainbow appeared as the backdrop when they repeated their vows. Perfect promise of love!

Sorry to hear about the ADHD and that arthritis must be painful. Not everyone can write regularly and I have time off quite often; it's always nice to see old friends back even if just for a while now and then. Have fun in Spain!

Great ideas and good advice. One of my daughter's had a seamstress friend who made her dress as a present. She and hubby were married on a Friday and she had a good deal on the wedding because she looked around and researched it all well. She made her own table decorations too. We all made a weekend out of it and the weather added it's own brilliant touch - over-looking a beautiful Cornish beach with the sun shining and a gorgeous blue sky!

My other daughter also had her cake made by a friend and sorted out her own coverings for chairs outside in the garden of the hotel. She also made the flower decorations to go around the summerhouse which was the wedding 'venue'; they were put into used jam jars which everyone else had collected, washed and given to her beforehand, all finished off with pretty ribbon bows. Perfect!

Haven't seen you here for ages - great to see you back!
