3 Things to Do Online with Your Partner in a Long Distance Relationship (ldr)

Updated on August 24, 2015

You are in a relationship but your partner is not in the same place as you. Long distance relationships are hard and, believe me, I know. I've been in a long distance relationship for over 4 months now. But my relationship was never boring. Even if we're not really together, we find ways to keep things interesting by doing things together on the internet.

Let me tell you how.

Skype Dates

Skype is a powerful program in long distance relationships. I use it in a daily basis and it really is awesome. One thing we do often is skype dates, which is basically turning the camera on and do something fun, just like a date. Here's some examples of skype dating:

  • Real date. We did this on New Year's Eve. We both dressed up and celebrated together the new years eve. You can have a meal together and set the mood with some candles or music. It will feel exactly like a real date.
  • Sleep together. We do this often. This is basically sleeping with the computer next to you while the camera is on. If you miss sleeping with your partner, this can definately help.

Watch videos together

Yeah, it is possible to watch videos or movies together even though you're not near each other. You both only need to have a computer or tablet and access to the internet. This is possible using skype, facebook or and I have a full tutorial for you right here.

This is very interesting because you can actually do the usual date thing - meal (see skype date above) and movie.

Play games together

Playing online games together can also be a good thing to do online with your partner. Having fun together is a main factor to a successful couple.

Multiplayer games is what you should search for, so that you both get to play the game together. This will lead to a fun competition and a lot of laughter. Try to find some game you both like Poker or World of Warcraft. You can also opt for some more simpler games like Tic Toe.

There's also the option of playing facebook games like Farmville or The Sims Social, but I reckon it won't have the same effect.

Tip: Try playing isketch, the online pictionary. It will be fun and it will also bring up your creative side.

Have you ever been in a long distance relationship?

Yes, we'll have some good phone time. But it's a bit limited, as her mother can be nosy, and she never feels alone. Worst case scenario, we build up the passion 'til she gets home! :)

@SidKemp Will you have the possibility to call each other? Letters would also be a great way because you can make it romantic and playful. I might actually do a hub about that subject, so stay tunned ;)

My wife and I have had to go long-distance now and again for up to 10 months. We're about to have two 4-weyek separations this summer, as she goes to help her mom, while I stay home to hold down the fort, help her dad, and take care of her cat. Unfortunately, she'll be out of Internet range, so your ideas won't work for us this time. We'll have to come up with something else!

I have had long-distance relationships (more and more common with the Internet). My only advice is to keep doing reality checks along the way. You can get very wrapped up in what you create in your own mind when you spend hours on the phone, on Skype or in emails. These are great tips - thanks for sharing!
