Anam Cara, My Best Friend
Happy Birthday Anam Cara!
My best friend’s birthday is today. We’ve been friends since we were five years old. Now that’s a long time, especially when you consider all the stupid fights girls can get into in grade school over stupid things, like boys. We always seemed to be on the same side of everything though. We were always in trouble together; and even now I can’t admit all the trouble we got into but we still laugh about it. We were also always there for each other through some really, really hard times; lost touch for a bunch of years and picked our friendship up again like it had been only days since we had seen each other. It took about a week of constant chatter, crying, laughing, and stories until we were all caught up again.
You know how in this life there seems to be one person who understands you no matter how much or how little you say? She is that person to me. One look in her eyes and I could tell you how she is feeling. We go through the same emotions even though we are miles apart. When we catch up with each other again, everything is explained and we know why we were feeling a certain way on a certain day. If I want to know how she is, I just look inside my heart. She does the same.
We lead two very different lives, you could say as different as night and day…but our moods and personalities just blend together to form a perfect space to call home. I know that I could tell her anything, and she would stand beside me as my greatest ally in life just because she loves me and needs no other reason except she knows that right or wrong, I would stand beside her unquestionably any time she needed me as well. That’s just the way it is.
We’ve shared dreams, disappointments, crises, exhilarations, holidays, homes, rites of passage, memories, families; secrets ….everything two friends could possibly share. And on a deeper note, we’ve questioned our spirituality, psychology, worth as women, strength, self-worth, and built each other back up when we needed to be reset. There is no other person in this world who knows me as well as she does. And no other person in this world I could trust to know me as well as she does.
This day, every year, I say a prayer to the goddess for her. I don’t know what my life would have been without her. She blesses me every single day of my life just knowing she is there.
The weather has been awful these past two weeks, and this year has been hard on me, so I’m giving her a hub page this year. Happy Birthday Baby!
You, with the gladiolus!
Come here, Smiley
I think I want to talk with you
About this long and glorious highway
From the blue skies of Colorado
The warm wind and the gorgeous mountains
Where we dreamed so many dreams
I loved those days with you.
Gandalf, shining Lady Wizard
Tall One from the Bavarian Alps
With a smile from ear to ear
Lady Gretna of the Artistic Ones
You have many names
Goddess of Grammar
And Lady Sonic; Are but a few we have given you
Tell me your stories; your hopes and all your dreams
And I’ll share mine with you
You know I believe in everything
And we can make them all come true
On the train station platform
So many words rang true
Virginia sang our song
We learned it through and through
“You can’t find peace by avoiding life”
“The patient must have a say in her treatment”
“I live with it too”
We cried because we knew what it all meant.
Through many moves and roller coasters
You and your love stayed by my side
You know I’d be there for you too
We’ve all got nothing to hide
I thank goddess for you,
Because of all the times you are here
All the hospitals, times I needed you
I never ever feared
Today I celebrate you
In my humble little way
For all that you are to me
Anam Cara, Happy Birthday.
