Do You Consider Yourself Adventurous?: Questions To Ask Fellow Travelers And Traveling Companions

Updated on March 25, 2017

If you have spent much time traveling, you may realize how easy it is to ask fellow travelers the same basic questions: Where are you from? What do you do for a living? Where are you traveling to? How old are you? The list goes on, but hopefully it is clear that these questions don’t necessarily inspire edifying discussions. Also, depending how long you have been traveling and how often you’ve answered these questions, these inquiries can become tiresome due to repetition. One solution is to consider other questions you can ask fellow travelers—a group which includes anyone you are traveling with. This list of question features questions which are generally innocent enough to ask someone you’ve just met. In other words, it’s much more acceptable to ask a fellow traveler about whether he or she wanted to be a twin compared to asking them about any political or religious convictions.

A handful of these questions can be answered very simply. Despite this, they can promote greater discussion if you ask follow-up questions. This is admittedly more likely to happen if you’ve been traveling with someone and have developed a high enough level of comfort. Finally, akin to in the rest of life, certain people will have little or no interest in answering questions they consider silly or inessential. You may even read this list and think, “I have no desire to discuss such topics.” Nonetheless, I present this list in the hopes a few of the questions will inspire you to think beyond the usual topics of conversation the next time you are in transit.
