Dating is a challenge in itself these days, but with the poor economy, it's even harder to be able to afford to go on a date with your spouse or significant other. By being creative, there are some wonderful times to be had, for no money at all. If you are dating someone, and you take them on a date that costs no money, and they are turned off by it, then there's a hint this person may not be the person you want to spend the rest of your life with!

Here are my top 10 free dates to help you have fun with the one you love:

1) Go to a local or state park and take a hike...

There are plenty of state parks that are free and will allow admittance from dusk till dawn. Others will let you in for free after 5:00 p.m.Taking a hike is not only good for your bodies but is a beautiful way to spend some time together. All you really need is supportive shoes, and maybe some cold water which you can bring from home. A camera is a nice idea as well because it can help you take pictures to remember the date and the beauty of nature around you.

2) Watch for falling stars...

When my children were little, we used to spread a blanket out in the field behind our house and spend an hour or so many an August night watching for falling stars after dark. It was a very special time because while we watched for stars, we talked about all kinds of things that were on our mind or questions we hadn't thought to ask each other during our busy days. This can work well for couples too. Just bring the bug spray or an extra blanket on cool nights. And don't forget to make a wish when you see the star, and before it is totally done blazing across the sky. I wished on many a falling star back in the days I was dating my husband...and there you have it, we are married now, so it really works!

3) Go to the beach...

Taking a walk hand in hand on the beach, just at the water's edge, so you're feet get wet but your clothes don't need to, is a very romantic date. For real romance, though, it's best to go after the crowds have gone home. Dusk is perfect, as you may be fortunate enough to see a sunset, or if you stay long enough on a moonlit night, the moon will light your way down the beach. You can bring chairs or a blanket and just listen to the waves as they crash against the shore. Picnics are great on the beach as well. Speaking of picnics...

4) Go on a picnic...

Picnics are great and can be experienced anywhere that is a beautiful or favorite spot. State parks, beaches, out in the woods, overlooking a lake or pond, etc. All you need is a pretty spot, and food you already have from home.

5) Fly a kite...

Assuming you have a kite at home already, it costs you nothing to fly a kite. If you don't have a kite flying area near your house, you may have to spend a little gas money to get to an open field or beach, but it's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

6) Have a Game Night...

This is inexpensive because you probably already have games at your house. Challenging games like Monopoly or Scrabble can be lots of fun for a couple who don't take winning all that seriously but love a good competition. And add a glass of wine, and some pretzels or popcorn from the cupboard and you will have a date that's fun and relaxing.

7) Go for a bike ride...

Have bike, will travel. Bike rides are free if you already have a bike. Leave the house, or pack them into your car and find a scenic spot. This date gives couples time together, but also a fun way to burn off calories. For a bit more romance, hopefully, you have a tandem bike which is the true experience of togetherness!

8) Go to a museum on Free Museum Day...

Most museums have a free admission day. Sometimes they are as often as once per month, and sometimes it's just once per year. Check out local museums in your area on the internet to see which ones they are, and make a point to write it on your calendar, so you don't miss the day.

9) Go to an outside concert...

Outdoor concerts are so much fun because not only do you get to hear great music for free, but you can sit in comfort as well. Just make sure to bring comfortable chairs or a comfy blanket to lay on. And of course and outside concert with a picnic from home adds to the enjoyment. Even if it's just soda and snacks. Once it gets dark, you can lay side by side and look at the stars while being musically entertained.

10) Go to a free event by entering contests and sweepstake to win free tickets....

There are sweepstakes and free contests going on around you all the time. You can hear them on radio stations, watch for them in the newspaper, and go online to find them. Winning tickets to anything that makes it free makes for a great experience. I have heard people on the radio win tickets to concerts, sporting events, movies, restaurants, the circus, plays, and state and local fairs. Half the fun of going to these events is knowing that you saved money by winning the tickets. My favorite website to find out about winning things is:

      jpcmc,

Sounds really interesting. I don't think we have any parks here in the United States that offer activities like that or seminars. I wish they did. Thanks for sharing this info.

      Hi karen,

it's just your regular park but with emphasis on being eco-friendly. One park close to our home is the Lamesa Dam Eco Park. The park offers tree planting activities and environmental awareness seminars. There are other activities like boating, wall climbing, butterfly farm, orchidarium, and others.

      Hi Karen,

I live in the Philippines. We have some Eco-parks in the city and it's a great break from the buzzling city life.

That's so neat. What state do you live in? Maybe you could add to your comment and leave readers some ideas of free parks to go to in your area? And congrats on the new baby!

WOW, these list of yours practically enumerated the things my wife and I love to do. Although recently we don't have much time for ourselves. We spend more time with our new baby. But whenever we can, we bring our baby along for a short walk. I miss going up the roof and just watching the stars with her.
