What is a Gift Registry and What is It's Purpose

Who came up with the idea of gift registries and why? We all have personally heard about the couple that received four toasters, three blenders and five identical sets of wine glasses as wedding gifts. Although we know the gifts were well intended, our first thought is to send a thank you card stating how thrilled we are with the lovely wine glasses and with the other four identical sets we received, we may now have a dinner party for 20 with matching wine glasses. We know this wouldn't be polite so, instead, we spend a weekend running around returning all the duplicate wedding gifts.

Even more challenging when purchasing a wedding gift is the fact that many couples set up housekeeping together prior to tying the knot and they have already bought most of the things needed to set up a home. So what does one buy for a wedding gift when nothing is really needed. Cash is always a gift option but some people feel ackward giving money. This is when some very market savey store owners came up with the idea of a gift registry. The guest doesn't have to give cash, the couple get a wanted and needed item and the store has increased business. It's a win, win, win idea where everyone benefits.

Wikipedia Defines a Gift Registry This Way

"A Wish List" that is made public and managed by a particular retailer.

A Retail Managed Registry Has Three Goals:

  1. It facilitates communication between gift givers and receivers. Recipients can compile a gift registry and make it available to anyone who will present them with a gift. Gift givers can then be certain that they are purchasing items that the receiver will appreciate.
  2. A registry can prevent gift givers from duplicating gifts when it is managed efficiently. To accomplish this, the retailer should remove each item from the registry as it is purchased.
  3. The registry process should allow gift purchasers to be discreet about what they have bought. This is so the person receiving the gifts will not know who purchased which items until they are surprised at the time of gift giving.

Planning the Honeymoon

The wedding is planned but what about the honeymoon. With money tight these days, a nice honeymoon might be out of reach financially. A cruise was in the initial planning but now financing the cruise seems a bit out of reach until a couple of very smart cruise lines figured out that honeymoon cruises could be financed by the friends and relatives of the bride and groom as a wedding gift, a gift that would be deeply appreciated and cherished forever.

This is how the honeymoon cruise registry came in to being. It is very similar to any retail gift registry except the couple will have some or all of their honeymoon paid by all who choose to participate in helping the couple finance their dream.

Personal Wedding & Honeymoon Website Provided Free to the Bride & Groom

Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International Cruise Lines really go all out to make the registry easy to set up and accessible with providing a free website to the couples. Each cruise line also keeps a wedding and honeymoon planner staff ready, willing and able to assist the couple in all ways needed when setting up a registry. This form of gift giving has become very popular and more cruise lines are participating in wedding and honeymoon cruise planning.

Summary

A honeymoon gift registry is a nice alternative to look into rather than spending time running around returning blenders, toasters and other kitchen gadgets that you already have. If a cruise honeymoon is not something you are interested in, there are honeymoon travel registries sponsored through travel agencies where you may choose any type of travel. A nice honeymoon is something that you will treasure forever and is the ultimate gift that friends and family could be a part of giving.

Rather than be tied to a particular cruise company, there are gift registries like GiftSimple that let you list whatever you want (like a cruise, or new luggage, or a romantic seaside dinner) and friends and family can contribute. All gifts are redeemed in cash, so you can take the money and pay for the honeymoon, new clothes for the trip, whatever you want! But it gives you more freedom than using a cruise company's registry.
