Movies with Bad to Rotten Honeymoons

Lots of bad things happen in the movies. There can be terrible things that happen. It can also be a funny thing for movie makers to show people having bad honeymoons.

What Happens in Vegas - Ashton Kutcher stars with Cameron Diaz
They wake up to find themselves married. Ashton's character tells her in the morning that it was all a mistake. Then they find out that he won a million dollar lottery ticket. They are then forced to spend time together by the court.

Just Married - Ashton Kutcher again stars in this with Brittany Murphy
It really is pretty hilarious. They are in love. They go to Paris. He has a terrible time of it there. They are not thrilled with the room. There are cockroaches in it. He then manages to set the hotel on fire. It does not go that well after that.

Death on the Nile - A mystery story from the book, with Mia Farrow in the lead role
A cat and mouse game ensues when they get to Egypt. Her girlfriend steals her boyfriend and they go on a honeymoon in Egypt. Mia Farrow follows them to wreck revenge. All is not as it seems.

Gone with the Wind - In this famous movie Scarlet O'Hara has married Charles to try and make up for the fact that Ashley Wilkes would not marry her. It is not the best idea. She does not know what she is in for as her mother had hinted to her. She is not that happy with her husband. A guy that saw the play said that she covers up her face then with the sheets.

The Dutchess - There was a book that inspired this movie. Keira Knightley starred in the movie version. She is forced more or less into a marriage where she will gain wealth and prestige by marrying the duke. The honeymoon does not seem to go well. She complains it might be better if he would talk. In a little while he begins an affair with another lady there.

Coal Miner's Daughter - This was the true story of country singer Loretta Lynn. It is rumored that someone overheard her saying things, but it also seems to have been taken from the book. She married very young and was not prepared for being married. She was in love with her husband and wanted to keep him.

Marnie - This is an Alfred Hitchcock film. Tippi Hedren starred in it with Sean Connery. She is a thief that has problems. Marnie did not want to be married but she is tricked into it. Later she finds out what it has all come from.

The Heartbreak Kid - Cybill Shepherd stars in this film about a honeymoon gone wrong. There is a Jewish guy on his honeymoon and he is not happy. He finds Cybill Shepherd playing a hot girl that comes over and starts trouble. He decides that he wants a divorce. The only thing is that after he is married again he begins to see he has made a mistake

Niagara - Marilyn Monroe had her first big role in this film. There was a couple on their honeymoon. Then there was trouble with another couple. I take it that Marilyn Monroe was there and things happened. It did not go on along as it should have.

Elephant Walk - Elizabeth Taylor made this movie in 1954. She moves to Ceylon when she is married to a plantation owner. Upon arrival she finds that he has parties after dinner but she is about the only lady around. He ignores her a lot. Also the elephants want to be able go on their elephant walk that has been built over by the house. Things get out of hand.

Ryan's Daughter - This movie was set in Ireland. Sarah Miles plays an Irish girl that wanted to marry Robert Mitchum's character in the movie. She is disappointed in the honeymoon. She goes on to have an affair with a British officer stationed there and trouble ensues.

The Honeymoon Killers Movie Trailer

The Honeymoon Killers

The worst honeymoons were the ones experienced by the victims of the Lonely Hearts killers. These women would place ads looking for love in the classified or answer ads from a con man.

The con man's name was Raymond Fernandez. At first it was said, he just wanted to con the women out of their money. One of the women that he tried it on was Martha Beck. Martha Beck was an overweight woman that had a terrible desire for love. She saw him as being her big chance.

Even though Martha knew he was no good she wanted him and convinced him to keep her on. They then began their spree together. Martha was jealous and turned him into a murderer. Eventually they were caught. They were both executed in Sing Sing in 1951.

There are at least two movies made about them. One is called "The Lonely Hearts Killers." The next was "The Honeymoon Killers" in 1969. Both of the movies really played out the drama of the killings.

Reasons for Bad Honeymoons

I am listing bad honeymoons here that could be from many reasons. One or the other of the partners is very unhappy in the marriage. Both of them could realize that it was not a good idea at all.

The marriage gives the husband certain rights that the bride is not prepared for and doesn't like. It could be that she was just not ready for marriage. It could also be that he was not acting right.

The marriage may go on and get better or it could be that the two of them will split. In modern times, it is much easier for couples to call it quits then it was in medieval or ancient times.

Then there are the other darker reasons. That is such as the ones in "The Honeymoon Killers." The whole idea has been a scam. The man has not felt anything much at all for her and is just using her. That could be true for men or women.

Real Life Disasters

Elizabeth Taylor and Nicky Hilton

The marriage started out as being just perfect. Nicky wanted to keep on playing and did not want to go and see his bride until much later in the night. Elizabeth Taylor had been waiting for him and was furious. That is what I read about it. Later people would hear her asking him to dance with her and him refusing it. Naturally many other men would have liked to dance with her. In the divorce Elizabeth charged him with mental cruelty. People that are spoiled can have a hard time with marriage.

Strangely, Elizabeth was also in a movie where her husband was ignoring her after she had just been married. It was called "Elephant Walk." It was in Africa and the elephant walk that they were used to using was right near their home.

Jean Harlow

Jean Harlow had a horrible wedding night somehow. It is still clouded with mystery. Whatever really happened it was not good. Her husband was much older than her. They had seemed to be in love. Her husband had then after marrying her committed suicide.

Britney Spears

She married her childhood friend,Jason Alexander. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time to find comfort in marriage. People do want to show that they can find someone. It seems to have been one of those Las Vegas fueled adventures that ended badly. It is reported to have only lasted 55 hours.

This is not to say of course, that these are the only people that this ever happened to. They were just in the public eye. It could really happen to just about anyone.

Romeo and Juliet

Books with Disastrous Honeymoons

Many of the women may have a bad honeymoon, but they still decide to continue with the marriage such as it is.

"Romeo and Juliet," by Shakespeare - This is a bad honeymoon as it turns out, as there really is none to speak of. There are double suicides that come about because they have had to try and hide the fact that they are married. True love does not run smoothly in the play.

"The Falls," by Joyce Carol Oates - It starts out as being a honeymoon between two people that is not going all that well. The bride wants to begin the wedding. The groom is a minister. The guy has a lot of problems with the idea of a wedding and decides to go and commit suicide by Niagara Falls. The book goes on from there.

"Rose Red," by Stephen King - This book has a really rotten honeymoon scenario that it goes into. Her husband has no real feelings for her and doesn't care. It is a strange book. She has the maid with her and he is rude to them both. She is afraid of him, but still stays in the marriage.

A Good Honeymoon

The key to having a good honeymoon would seem to be getting to know one's mate before the wedding takes place. One never knows really what character flaws one might find in your new guy or gal that you care for so much. It is a good idea to make sure you have made the right choice.
