How Future Passed Through Despair Searching for Hope

Updated on July 3, 2009

Future, after battling Past's demons, continued her search for the Unknown. Many roads taken, many paths sought, but the right one never found. One day, a wind whispered that the Unknown was in Hope. Future sought for Hope, but she had no map. Questioning many people, Future learned many were not able to give directions.

Many directions were to somewhere and many led to dead ends, but none led to Hope. Future began to despair that she would ever find Hope. Then she met Miss Lead. Miss Lead was an expert in Hope. Future was on her way. She turned right at the next stubbed toe. Took a sharp left at the next great life event. And went straight past the fall. Expecting to find Hope, she was very surprised to find Despair.

Big and dark, Future knew Despair was not Hope.  Despair was dark and dismal, Hope was bright and brilliant.  She wandered around trying to reclaim the entrance, and thus exit.  First she found A. Pathy.  Mr. Pathy, uncaring and indifferent, told the Future to be happy where she was.  Mr. Pathy said, "Just be happy you are alive, what does it matter where you are."

Future decided Mr. Pathy did not know Hope and moved on.  Next she met Melanie Choly.  Melanie was sure there was no such place as Hope.  "LOL, people talk of Hope sometimes, but I know it is not real."

Future could not understand, Hope was real, why would Melanie not believe in it.  Melanie laughed, "I used to search all the time for Hope, but I never found it.  There is no Hope, just Despair."  Future left Melanie, understanding she would never find the way to Hope through her.

Many others lived in Despair, Deb Pression, Miss Ery, A. Banyon, but none knew how to find Hope. Future knew that Hope was out there somewhere and vowed she would find it! She turned one more corner, and to her surprise, she saw an artist painting a beautiful picture. She ran to the artist and inquired his name.

"Hi!" he said, "My name is Hope Phil."  Future was amazed at the beauty of his picture and told Phil .  "HaHaHoHo," Phil laughed. "This is a picture of my home town." Future was entranced by the laugh. She had not heard a laugh since she arrived in Despair.

"Your hometown is quite lovely." Future said, "What is it's name?"

"My hometown is called Hope," said Hope Phil.

"Hope?! That is the town I am searching for. I heard the Unknown was there!" Future exclaimed. "But, what are you doing here??"

Hope Phil laughed again, and the clouds covering Despair seemed to fall apart somewhat. He laughed again, and Despair became brighter. "I live in Hope. It is a wonderful town, full of sun and happiness. I love it soo much, that I wanted to tell others about it."

Future was amazed to find this jolly and joyful man in Despair. "Why are you here?" she asked. "I have not met anyone here who may be interested in bright colors or sunshine."

Hope Phil looked at Future seriously now. "I am here to show people how to get to Hope." he said. "Many people end up in Despair searching for Hope, and so I paint pictures of Hope to help them."

"Do many come and look?" Future asked.

Hope Phil became very serious at this question. "Not as many as I thought may. But occasionally someone happens upon me who has questions. Quite like you. When they do, I paint them a new picture of Hope. And I give directions."

"Directions!" Future thought, "Oh, I must get directions." "Please tell me how to get to Hope." Future asked. "Your picture is so beautiful, even if the Unknown is not there, I know I will like it better than Despair!"

Phil thought about this for a moment. Then he answered, "Yes, I will give you directions. However, you look tired and hungry. First let us have a meal. Then you can have a nap, do not worry, I will watch over you. Then I will give you the directions."

Future became upset. "No, I want out of Despair now! Please give me directions, I want to go."

Hope Phil smiled. He said, "You are tired. If you leave now the Past may find you sleeping and rob you of all you have left. Eat, sleep and tomorrow, when you are strong, I will give you the directions. You may leave early in the morning and you should make it to Hope by nightfall."

Future thought this over. It was very late. She was very hungry. And, she was very, very tired from wandering around Despair. "OK," she said. "I will eat with you. I hope it is not goat, I hate goat. Then tomorrow, after I have slept, you can give me the directions. I feel as if I can trust you."

Hope Phil grinned. "I will feed you something other than goat then. I love this world and it's people. I can be trusted."

The Future sat down to wait. She asked Hope Phil if he needed help, but he would not think of it. "I am used to doing this by myself. You just rest and think about tomorrow when you arrive in Hope," he said. Phil started a fire and got busy cooking.

Future stared into the flames and reflected on all she had learned. She realized she needed to be more careful who she took direction from. She wondered if she would ever be wise enough to know who was truthful and who was lying. She had come searching for the Unknown in Hope and ended up in the giant, dark town of Despair. Thank goodness, she had found Hope Phil, or she may still be wondering around, lost and forgotten.

Future and Phil talked as they ate. Future had never had anything that tasted so good! She refrained from asking Phil what it was, glorifying in the succulent tastes that became heaven in her mouth. As they talked, Future found out that Phil had lost a brother in the town of Despair. Phil was still searching, and would most likely search until the day he died. Phil was sad and felt his brother did not know how much he loved him.

Future helped Phil that day. She told Phil that sometimes people are so lost in Despair that they cannot find their way out. She told Phil, that she had almost been so lost, she had almost given up on finding Hope. But, she had kept going and searching for a way out of Despair. This is when she turned the corner and found Phil.

Phil finally realized that he had done everything he could have done for his brother. He realized that if his brother had still been searching for Hope, he would have found him. That night Phil broke down and wept like a baby for his brother. Thank goodness, Future was there to hold him. Phil cleared his soul that night and vowed that he would forever more help the people of Despair find Hope.

Future felt that he was so strong. She was inspired by his love for his brother and his willingness to offer Hope to Despair. Future told Phil that she loved him. Future then went in search of Hope. Having the wonderfully easy directions given to her by Phil, she found Hope easily. However, the Unknown was no longer there.

Future's song to the Unknown
