Unique, original, beautiful, welcoming, educational, are but a few of the words that I can think of to describe Mechai Viravaidya's restaurant named Cabbages and Condoms. It was birthed out of a necessity to educate the people about family planning and AIDS/HIV, as well as generating income. Located near one of Bangkok's main business districts, this restaurant has attracted attention all over the globe. With an ongoing rating of one of the best restaurants in Thailand, Bangkok, it's unique presentation as well as it's cuisine speaks for itself. One thing to be sure of is that there are no after dinner mints, instead you get a condom with your bill. I believe that this is the only restaurant in the world that is dedicated to birth control.

Sexual Awareness

Upon entering the restaurant you will find all kinds of signs that promote sexual awareness. One of the signs that you will come across is "Our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy". This message in and of itself lets you know what to expect at this Thai restaurant. They are in the business of not only feeding you but also making sure that date night does not go without education. The de'cor alone lets you know that you are in for a treat in more ways than one. Can you imagine a life-size mannequin of Tiger Woods dressed in an outfit that is made completely of condoms? As strange as it may sound, they have one right beside the please wait to be seated sign. Even Santa Clause and all of the other mannequins throughout the restaurant are clothed in condoms. Superheroes, flower arrangements, lampshades, they all show there recognition to the condom god. There is no way that you can leave Cabbages and Condoms without being educated.

Right next door to Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant is a family planning clinic. It is one of several in Bangkok where the poor can go to terminate a pregnancy. It is because of the dangers of unsafe abortions by Thai women, who are struggling, that the authorities permit this practice. Let us not forget about the men, because it is at this very clinic where they can go to get a vasectomy.

Necessity is the mother of invention

In 1984 the first known AIDS victim was detected in Thailand. That number has changed to more than one million infected people today. It was predicted that if this problem went unchecked that the numbers would be around 2-4 million by the year 2000; with one in every three deaths being AIDS related.

The PDA was the first to take hold of the reigns to get the needed information out to the people. AIDS programs that teach prevention and the steps to take to safeguard self against the disease were on their way.

Cabbages and Condoms (c&c) restaurant was brought into being to help with the fight. Established by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) this restaurant is one of Thailand's largest, most successful, Private, non-profit organisations.

Mechai Viravaidya

Born to a Thai father and Scottish mother in Thailand, Mechai Viravaidya was one of four children. He went to college in Australia at the University of Melbourne. When he returned home to Thailand in the mid 1960s he began working in family planning, where he emphasized the use of condoms.

In 1973 Mechai Viravaidya (activist) left his job and founded the PDA in 1974 to continue his work in educating and bettering the lives of the rural poor. It seems as if he took the by any means necessary approach to tackle the job. Mechai held condom blowing contests for children in school. He encouraged cab drivers to hand out condoms to customers and let us not forget Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant where you receive a condom/condoms with every bill. The restaurant got it's name from Mechai's belief that in order for any family planning organization to be successful, birth control should be as accessible as vegetables in the market place.
