The essence of love
If love can be defined as an emotion that ranges in between 167 °F and 212 °F, it seams necessary for partners to have similar temperature levels, or in other words be equally in love with each other.
Partners don't have to have precisely the same temperature. A little difference is interesting and stimulative but the bigger the gap the more painful and dangerous a sudden touch can get for the colder one. As long as the partners move at the same pace, in the same direction they acclimate in the process of the chase and all is fine. The balance is restored. Temperatures are settling.
Half and Half
Lovers can then go on to climb Plato's Ladder of Love ascending from the physical love of the individual to the love of Beauty itself. This virtuous love embraces all goodness, all merit including the pure love of and for the individuals that have been part of the ascend. But it moves beyond to the love for the beauty of the soul, the love for the beauty of laws and love for the beauty of knowledge until it reaches the vast sea of Beauty.

Ascenting the ladder of love allows the lover to love previous individuals in a richer, fuller and more appropriate sense.
Pyramid of Love
Maybe the ladder of love is more like an upside-down pyramid with each level providing a foundation for the next.
Growing wider and bigger and better. Growing upon all the love there was for all the love there is.
