Bullying at its high,Americas # 1 Secret Crime

Updated on April 11, 2011

Identifying Bullies,Cases that Made Headlines

Signs of bullying are always present,it could be seen in family members, friends, teachers and anyone who's breathing. Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation. Bullying often describes a form of harassment perpetrated by an abuser who possesses more physical and/or social power and dominance than the victim. Bullying is not always caused by backgrounds of abuse as many proffesionals would see it, some bullys hurt others just for personal gain, its a sick and twisted game for them. Bullying is not a game for the victims and its never a phase that will just go away because if you are a child it can stick with you forever having an dramatic effect on everything you try to do in life. You can carry fear with you forever from bullying abuse.

Lots of teens have died in the past few years from depression, the results of bullying causing low self esteem with self hate. This should really be pushed to the forefront because it is getting worse, before long will we be able to stop it?

Think back on when you were a child, maybe you can relate to this story of another life lost to bullying. Sara Frazier was a 13 year old girl from chicago's west side Austin neighborhood. She was a straight A student carrying a big secret from the age of about 8 years old. Sara had grown up with her bullies, some living on the same block. She'd tried hard to adapt, her parents, teachers, pastor almost every adult she told about the bullying had the same exact response which was to not pay attention to any of the sayings,to pretend that it wasnt happening and that the other kids were just jealous of her. Did you know that when a child just pretends its not happening, adults looking the other away, the problem grows rapidly? Saras problem grew so out of hand by the age of 13 that she was cutting herself, taking pills, drinking among other things but the way she dealt with her problems no one would've ever seen a difference in her behavior. Sara committed suicide on April 12,2009. Now everyone wants to know what happened,by now its far too late.

If you have a child, teen or someone in your life who is reporting bullying abuse please pay attention, seek help immediately.

1. Visit the school/Make a report with the principal to have this on file

2. Request a meeting with the parents or anyone involved to try to settle the matter

3. File a police report for harrasment/restraining order

4. Keep a close watch on your loved ones, look for signs of isolation, depression, cuts, bruises, anything that would be deemed as odd

Please follow the steps above because they are neccesary. If you are a parent and your child, teen is doing the bullying or suspected of doing so

1. Talk to your child to try to get an understanding

2. Set ground rules of what might happen if it doesnt stop

3. Seek proffesional counseling for your family

4. Spend more time around your child be it as it may,you could be doing something wrong in parenting

5. Know who your childs friends are, what they are into etc

If you fail to take time out for the steps you could be visiting your child in a detention center or jail.

Case Studies that made headlines for School Shootings

Columbine High Massacre: On April 20, 1999, in the small, suburban town of Littleton, Colorado, two high-school seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, enacted an all-out assault on Columbine High School during the middle of the school day. The boys' plan was to kill hundreds of their peers. With guns, knives, and a multitude of bombs, the two boys walked the hallways and killed. When the day was done, twelve students, one teacher, and the two murderers were dead. The haunting question remains: why did they do it?

Amish Schoolhouse shooting 2006: NICKEL MINES, Pa. - A milk-truck driver carrying three guns and a childhood grudge stormed a one-room Amish schoolhouse one Monday, sent the boys and adults outside, barricaded the doors with two-by-fours, and then opened fire on a dozen girls, killing three people before committing suicide. The gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, a 32-year-old truck driver from the nearby town of Bart, was bent on killing young girls as a way of “acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago” when he was a boy.

Virginia tech shooting: Thirty-three people were killed today on the campus of Virginia Tech in what appears to be the deadliest shooting rampage in American history, according to federal law-enforcement officials. Many of the victims were students shot in a dorm and a classroom building.

Northern Illinois University: The Northern Illinois University shooting was a school shooting that took place on February 14, 2008, during which a gunman shot multiple people on the campus of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb,Illinois, United States, killing six and wounding eighteen. Bullying is a problem that is unfortunately never going to go away and our biggest fear now is that it is entering the social networks like facebook, myspace and twitter. Cyber bullying is the worst extreme because it takes it to new heights and it is responsible for destroying so many young lives. A young girl moved from Ireland to Massachusetts with her family. Her name was Phoebe Prince and she was just 15 when she sadly took her life. She was a victim of cyber bullying which was non stop and relentless. This is a major problem that we all have to stand up to and not allow to happen anymore. I think you address a very important subject here which I also have written about. I also attended Virginia Tech studying mechanical engineering in the early 1980's and I was deeply saddened of the tragedy that took place there. It is a fine institution and should be known for its superior educational programs and student diversity but now will be known for this tragedy. Thank you for writing about this very important societal issue.

Extremely good advice. We have had lots of cases in the UK whereby teens commit suicide cos they just can't cope with the bullying. If only they knew where to get help.............
