How to Make a Friend (Not the Recommended Method)

Updated on December 26, 2012

Not My Usual Reaction

I was in eigth grade, riding the school bus home, when I discovered that some guys have a strange way to choose their friends...

I generally considered myself something of a passivist back then. Because of bullying, I had started taking karate lessons in 7th grade at the Y.M.C.A. The lessons worked, and the bullying had stopped; I wasn't the passivist I once was either.

Back to the school bus...I was sitting towards the back of the bus when David, who was generally considered tough, started rating me. I returned fire, and that kept up several minutes. Finally, in frustration, I did something completely out of character for me...I punched him.

The Next Day

David immediately punched me back, and I was expecting the bus driver or someone to notice, and I thought I would end up in the principle's office the next day. Nothing ever came of it...or so I thought.

Riding home from school that next day, David and I were in the same seats again. David's buddy started in on me; David interrupted -- "Leave him alone, He's my friend!"

Imagine that.

Great story! At least it worked out ok. That is hard to imagine. Taking Karate lessons was a great idea for sure and its good that it helped. I voted up.
