How to communicate your love for your spouse?Silence speaks love!

Updated on November 9, 2013

‘After an argument, silence may mean acceptance or the continuation of resistance by other means’ Mason Cooley

How do you feel when there is silence between you and your spouse? Do you feel comfortable or do you feel uneasy that there is something wrong? Married life is vibrant only when there is love expressed between both of you. Do only words express love? Your silence also can convey your love for each other in an emphatic manner.

You cannot keep talking with your spouse24\7, can you? There are times when you do not feel like talking and you want to keep quiet. You keep silent and if your love is deep enough, your silence also conveys the way your marriage life is. If you are not compatible with your spouse, whenever you both speak, angry sparks fly between you. You argue and exchange harsh words. Your fight lengthens and when you are tired you let go.

There is silence after your fight, but that is not the end to it as the smolders are still active and burning. The silence between you is very hot and scorching, as it is an uneasy truce and not an end to your war. Silence rules your home and it is waiting for one wrong word from any of you to be broken loudly. The uneasy silence between you makes you drift apart till you have drawn too far away from each other to unite again.

You are married and you lead an ordinary and routine life. You go to work and your spouse goes to work. You both come home tired and all you want is quiet as your head is hammering with the tension you had in your work place. There is no big clash of thoughts between you, it is just you both are bored and do not have anything to talk with one another. ‘What is there to talk’ is your attitude towards your spouse and this is a common attitude you see nowadays in most marriages.

Your spouse has a problem, but you do not feel like sharing it and you are indifferently silent and the conversation between you is very routine and loveless. How can you hope for happiness in such a marriage? Your indifferent silence is not as stifling as the uneasy silence mentioned above, but nevertheless it can be as boring as a weather report.

But there is another exemplary silence which is a true indicator that your marriage is full of love, care and respect for one another and this type of quiet is connective silence. This silence speaks of the love you have for each other. You might be silent, but there is an inter-connective link between you that convey your love more than your words. You smile when you look at each other, hold hands when you suddenly remember your lovey-dovey days and this is love for you; loud and clear.

With stress and tension ruining your day to day life, your only solace should be your spouse and you should always reach out to her\him. There are times when you do not have the energy to talk, but your silence should not be oppressive, but suggest your love for each other. Your eyes should not be cold and expressionless, but be full of emotions so that your love for your spouse is conveyed even by your silence.

Although we're not married -- my significant other and I have maintained a treasured relationship for over 20 years now -- and silence has been brought into play on many occasions. We agreed early on: "Leave one thing unsaid each day!" There's many times hurtful words were on the tip of my tongue and that little saying headed them off. This Hub is excellent -- both in subject matter and advice and writing. Thanks so much for sharing your insight. Best/Sis

Done well. Congrats. You are right, silence is richer than any feelings as it conveys so much. Keep on writing.

Mathira, thanks for sharing these views. Reminds me of "Silence is golden." The heart does speak when the voice is hushed. Good article!
