Mens Tungsten Wedding Bands – a Man’s Quick Buying Guide

Updated on August 29, 2010

Mens tungsten wedding bands are something you may not have heard of as an option for wedding bands as they haven’t really been popular…until now.  As more and more people are turning away from traditional gold and silver wedding bands and looking for something more modern, more individualistic, more stylish, more men are turning to tungsten wedding bands.  Offering several benefits over traditional wedding bands, tungsten bands are strong, highly customizable and offer something just a little different for people who want to symbolize their union without breaking the bank.

If you’re in the market for a mens tungsten wedding band, there are some things you should know.  There are a ton of good resources online that can provide you with prices and information on tungsten wedding bands and if you should want to customize your band to give it that little extra touch (i.e. mens tungsten wedding bands with diamonds).  There are plenty of retailers online that will provide this service (for a price) but it’s best to get an idea of what you’re getting.  Plus it doesn’t hurt to do a little comparison shopping to try and find the lowest prices on tungsten wedding bands.  Most stores won’t give you any problems returning the ring.  If you’re at all worried about returns you could purchase the wedding ring from a popular jeweler so that you could return it to the local store.  Just make sure to read the agreement before you hit the buy button.

Pros of tungsten wedding bands:

Tungsten wedding bands are cheap – probably the biggest reason people choose tungsten for the wedding band, tungsten wedding bands are extremely affordable at a fraction of the price of traditional gold or silver rings.  While some people may be concerned that price is an indication of quality; rest assured that tungsten rings are very high quality, just not as expensive to produce as gold or silver.

Tungsten wedding bands are strong – made with a nickel and carbon alloy, tungsten carbide is very strong and incredibly durable.  Tungsten wedding bands are 4 times harder than titanium and 10 times harder than 18 karat gold.  This makes this type of ring handy if you do a lot of work with your hands because they’re difficult to scratch.

Tungsten wedding bands can be very shiny – depending on how much nickel is included in the alloy, they can be polished to provide a luster as shiny as other rings.  Or they can be a softer finish if you’re trying not to draw too much attention to it.

Tungsten wedding bands are highly customizable – Whether you want to have a little silver or gold mixed in to provide some contrast, have a diamond inlayed to give it some bling, or just want a design engraved, tungsten wedding bands can provide many options .

Drawbacks of Tungsten Wedding Bands

Tungsten wedding bands are difficult to size - because they’re so tough and durable it make them impossible to alter. Normally a ring has a spacer added or removed to fit the finger better. With tungsten it’s impossible to add or remove anything; once it’s cast that’s it. Therefore you need to know your ring size before purchasing one

Tungsten wedding bands can chip – Just because they’re durable doesn’t make them invincible. Whereas another ring might dent a little, the tungsten ring will end up chipping off given a pretty hefty blow. This shouldn’t be too much of a concern unless you work with your hands a lot and are danger of striking the ring hard.

Tungsten wedding bands can tarnish – On very rare occasions there will be enough cobalt in the mixture for the ring to be tarnished by the oils from your hands. This shouldn’t be too much of a concern; if you’re really concerned about it just ask to see the certificate that comes with the ring.

Tungsten World gave us a 45 day sizing return policy, its standard on all their rings so the sizing drawback isnt an issue. Also they use cobalt free tungsten which most reputable dealers do so it won't tarnish either. Sounds like the drawbacks aren't an issue in this case. I'm not worried about it chipping, I havn't heard of that happening much with reputable dealers. If so the warranty will cover it but I doubt it would ever happen anyway.
