Romantic Compliments for Any Girl | Most Romantic Things to Say

Updated on August 13, 2013

So you're a romantic clod...

Some people just don't seem to have a romantic bone in their body - whether by just the way they are or from little or no experience in the area of romancing a lady.

Of course if you want to pay a compliment to a girl or woman you need to say something that doesn't sound like it's either too well thought out or too corny.

If you can't be romantic, fake romantic. And who knows... some of it might just rub off on you in the meantime.

Following are all kinds of romantic ideas, romantic lines and some do and do not romantic lists, as well as how to pay a compliment to that special lady in your life. Follow this guide and you're sure to impress!

How to pay a romantic compliment...

There are only two rules when paying a good compliment...

  1. Don't be ambiguous or insulting - saying something like "Those big clunky orange shoes look good on you" can be quite insulting - you're saying either that the shoes are ugly or that she's ugly and goes with the shoes. Whether or not you meant either doesn't matter! So try to steer away from anything that could be taken the wrong way - even if there's only a small chance.

  2. Don't generalise - for a good romantic compliment you need to stay away from the general words such as "nice, pretty, interesting." Go for the big ones such as "beautiful, gorgeous, lovely" or the unique "vivacious, phenomenal". Be specific about the compliment so it doesn't sound made up. Instead of "I like those shoes" try "Those shoes go really well with that dress. They bring out the red overtones in the material." Say WHY you're paying the compliment.

Romantic lines

Want some quick and easy sweet things to say? Look out one of you might blush!

♫ If you stood in front of a mirror and held up eleven roses, you would see twelve of the most beautiful things in the world.

♫ If I had a rose for every time I thought of you I'd be walking in a garden forever.

♫ If you were a tear in my eye, I wouldn't cry for fear of losing you.

♫ Last night I looked up into the stars and matched each one with a reason why I love you. I was doing great until I ran out of stars.

♫ You are my bestfriend, my shoulder to lean on, the one person I know I can count on, you're the love of my life, you're my one and only, you're my everything.

Corny Lines or Not?

So - should you go with the tried and true, corny as hell pickup lines? Or try something so flowery and original that the girl is lost for words?

It really depends on the girl! If you have a girl who's cynical and a bit rough around the edges, chances are she won't be impressed by a sweet and see through line. Here are some different ideas depending on your girl...

Tough & Cynical - This is a tough nut to crack. You'll have to be both original and avoid corny as much as you can. This girl doesn't like flowers or chocolate. Try telling her something she doesn't expect - such as complimenting on a feature that you know she doesn't like about herself. If you can find a soft spot, you're in!

Sweet and Slightly Naïve - This girl is happy with any compliment. But don't let that mean you use just any old line. Don't forget to be original and don't you dare use the same line you've used on another girl!

Older Woman - This woman has heard everything. So go either far back or far forward. Pay her a compliment that reminds her of when she was young or when you first met. Or go with a compliment that's new and with the times - she'll appreciate that you're not treating her like an oldy!

Hippy Chick - This girl likes to get back to nature so let her - try comparing her to a plant or flower. Or let her know how peaceful or happy she makes you feel.

The Smart Girl - This one will see right through a corny line. Is she an avid reader? Show you share her interests and tell her she reminds you of the heroine of her favourite book - and don't forget to say why. Or tell her why you like her - leaving out the brains. If she's lived her life being told she's smart, chances are she'd like to know she's appreciated for something else.

This probably isn't romantic but wanted to share this anyway cos I find this funny and corny:

      Boy: Are you an arrow?

Girl: No! Do I look like an arrow to you?

Boy: Of course not. You're beautiful. But you have pierced my heart with your love.

This line wont work on me by the way. I think I belong to the tough and cynical kind! :-)

My favorite pick up a dance..."you don't sweat much for a fat bird". Surprisingly it has not been as successful as I would have liked:(

Hahaha - I like your 5 classifications of the different girl types. You should include a poll for that. It would be interesting to see which class people see themselves as most.
