My Frivolous Life - Friends, Hiking And Mt. Katahdin, Part 1
I am not sure who came up with this great idea of hiking in Baxter State Park, but it sure wasn't me!
These hiker friends of mine knew that I was not the outdoorsy type. Growing up in a city didn't help me with the outdoor activities. I knew how to walk though.... London gave me that ragged experience of walking everywhere and loving it!
Several years ago, I was going through this horrible divorce, but it was the best decision I had ever made; I was finally getting out of this vexatious marriage, to say the least! But, That is another story........
Anyway, I was totally enjoying my free time with my two little girls, but my friends and family were thinking otherwise. They were always concerned about my falling into the pit of depression..... Depression?! I was at the most blissful stage of my life!!
So, here I was relaxing at home when I get a call from my very close friend, Sue. The phone conversation went somewhat like this:
An invitation to go hiking with them.....
Yeah, My girls will be with their dad this coming weekend...
Few couples, ........ (couples, ugh!), to Baxter park....
Haha, not going to climb Mt. Katahdin, are we?!
You must be joking, .... Just hiking to one of the lakes and will have a picnic.....
Great! By the way Sue, You don't have to do this, ...... Sue, I am fine, really!!
(But does she listen to me.....)
So, we are all set for the hike, this coming weekend....
The only thing I could say was, 'Great!!', and we left it at that.
Oh yeah! She also mentioned that some friend of her husband was also going to be joining us. Tall and handsome, with hazel blue eyes! "you have to meet him!"
Well, I really wasn't interested in meeting anybody, but was curious about the hazel blue eyes, what the heck is that!!
Little about the Area:
"Millinocket is a former mill town in Penobscot County, Maine. Its a small town with a population of about 4506. Millinocket has both a forest and recreational area". The famous Baxter State Park, the home of Mt. Katahdin, is situated right beyond Millinocket. Mt. Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine at 5,268 feet was named Katahdin by the Penobscot Indians, the term means "The Greatest Mountain". Katahdin is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park: a steep, tall mountain formed from underground magma. The view of the mountain, as you enter the Penobscot County, is breath taking.
Reunion with friends:
I was driving down from the north, and the rest of the gang were coming up from the south. Milinocket happened to be in the middle, so it kind of worked out for everyone. As I was driving into Milinocket I went over the checklist of things to bring with me.... My sunscreen, cosmetic bag, my purse, food for the picnic, my hiking boots..... Yes, my hiking boots from L.L.Beans, I can't go wrong there.
As I drove into Baxter Park, i couldn't help it but notice the magnificent view! I move toward the designated parking lot, where we were all suppose to meet, and sure enough, the others were already there. With a delightful feeling of warmth, I jumped out of my jeep and run toward them, haven't seen them for what seem like ages. Hugs and kisses all around..... Good to see friends!
Oh, bad news, the guy with the hazel blue eyes, Jim, couldn't make it, bummer (just my luck!).
As we were chatting away I notice another jeep pulling in, of course grander than mine. Slowly I removed my sunglasses and my jaw wanted to drop, but I had to hold it up. Sue came behind me and whispered in my ear, "They came all the way here just to see you, Liz!".
(No, no, not Dave and Steve..... Noooo!!) I slowly nodded at Sue, trying not to show my dismay.....
Dave & Steve.....
Ok, let me tell you a little about Dave and Steve. My friends and I considered ourselves yuppies, but these too dudes considered themselves Major YUPPIES! They are from Boston. You see, we are the yuppies from ME (Maine) and we are not the same as Yuppies from MA, where they are from! If we are all geared up for the hiking with the latest LLBean stuff, they are LLBean, Cabela's AND some more! You get the idea, right?
All that actually didn't bother me that much; what really bothered me the most was that these two "Friends" of mine were more into fashion and brand names than ME!! Don't you just hate it when two guys know more about fashion then you do?!....... Ugh! BUT friends are friends!!
"Oh Liz, it's so good to see you!", they hug me with a sob. More hugs and kisses, then all kind of questions.... I try to answer but they have their own answers.... "No, no, I am fine.... Really!",
"You poor soul! Look at you!"
"I am doing great. I am walking 4 miles everyday, and........"
"Oh my, you have lost so much weight!"
"You poor thing! What a tragedy!"
(Ugh, why me!)
So I let them go on, nodding here and there and gave up on trying to say anything.
Finally, we all decide that it was time to start our hike.
Continues..... on part 2. See below!
