OkCupid Review

Updated on February 9, 2016

OkCupid is one of the leading free online dating websites on the internet. This is a review of OkCupid online dating service. One of the main benefits of OkCupid is that is is free. They do have premium features available for a cost, but the basic service such as finding matches and contacting them is free of charge.

OkCupid follows a similar format to other dating sites such as Match.com and eHarmony allowing users to narrow down their search results to find a compatible match. In this article we will go over set up, features, ease of use, positives, and negatives of OkCupid online dating service.

Getting Started on OkCupid

You can start by browsing local singles to get a feel for the website. This option can be done without registering, but it is highly recommended that you set up an account if you plan to take it seriously. Setting up a profile on OkCupid is very straight forward. Like other dating sites, you fill out your profile information, answer questions, and upload pictures. Once your information is filled out, you can start looking for matches, and other people can start finding you. You have the option to browse so that others can see your visits, or if you prefer more privacy, you can browse anonymously.

A big part of OkCupid is the questions. This is a feature where you and all the other members answer various questions and compare your results. This helps you get to know people and also helps you find accurate matches. They also have an option to take fun tests to determine things like personality and dating style. Users are able to create their own questions and tests if they like. Next we will go over the features available on OkCupid.

OkCupid Features

Ok Cupid offers a customized search process to narrow down results by percent match, distance, activity, and more. You can see how likely potential matches are to respond to you if you send them a message. Ok Cupid tells you who is online and gives you the ability to instant message them. This is an optional feature and can be turned off.

When you find someone you like, you can send a message. They then have the option to reply to you. If you are not ready to send a message yet, you can add the person to your favorites list.

As mentioned before you can answer public questions and take tests to share with other potential matches. You can even give gifts which are little icons you can send to people if you like their profile.

OkCupid has a wide variety of settings to customize your experience such as when to be notified of new activity and what to display on your profile. Users have the option of upgrading their account to a paid account in order to get more features such as anonymous browsing, additional search options, and removal of ads.

Using OkCupid

OkCupid is user friendly and has a nice overall look. The website layout has been updated and simplified but still has most of the same features. It can be very addicting especially when it come to answering the hundreds of questions available on the site. It is easy to search for people and send messages. There are plenty of options to play around with to keep you busy and interested in the site. Below we will go over the specifics about what is good and bad about OkCupid

Positives of OkCupid

The biggest positive of OkCupid is that it is free. You get a lot of options and a large user base to search from and you don't have to pay for a subscription.

Another positive is it is fun. The tests and questions are fun to answer and compare with others. It even rates your personality based on the answers to your questions so you can compare it to the other people on the site.

Privacy options are another plus of OkCupid. You can choose whether or not to upload a picture or fill out certain information. You can also browse anonymously if you prefer more privacy. You also have the option to make your profile only searchable by other OkCupid members.

Negatives of OkCupid

One of the negative of OkCupid is the lack of ability to customize your search as much as you might like to. For example, the smallest distance you can narrow it down to is 25 miles, and even when you search by distance, it still throws other matches in there. There are more ways we would like to be able to narrow down search results, but they are either not available, or you have to become a paid member to have access to those features.

UPDATE: You can now narrow down searches to as close as 5 miles.

Conclusion

Overall OkCupid is a good option for online dating because it is free, has a lot of members, and offers a lot of features. The website is stable and well developed. The overall vibe is fun and friendly. The only drawback is lack of some searchable features to narrow down the kind of results you are looking for. If you are interested in online dating, OkCupid is definitely worth trying out.

I like OKCupid, because it is free. I also like all those multiple choice questions you can answer. They're fun.

Great hub! I think you captured all the big points, both positive and negative, about the site. As a user of OKCupid, I agree that the site has more pros than cons, even more so when compared to other dating sites.
